Do not take this as a full buy in to the hype at Colorado; this is banking on the belief that Nebraska simply cannot match up with Shedeur Sanders, Travis Hunter and some of the Buffaloes' other playmakers. There's no doubt that the Cornhuskers will be improved this season under Matt Rhule, but it's still early in the campaign, and their roster turnover was nowhere near as drastic as the one at CU. If the Buffs want to leave the first five weeks with a winning record, this is a must-win as Oregon and USC are coming up. The defense is a concern, but in what could be a close game, are you really going to trust Nebraska?
YES! The Buffaloes are for REAL! Jackson State was one of the three best teams in FCS last year in just Deion Sanders third season. There was a major turnover in players however Sanders upgraded his new team at every position. If you upgrade just 1/2 point per player that is 11 points to the power rating but Deion upgrade a full point per player!!! I closed Colorado last year at an 81.5 and this years team at 102.5. Colorado QB Shedeur Sanders threw for over 500 yards, four touchdowns with zero interceptions. Nebraska lost a heartbreaker to Minnesota and will be improved in 2023 however this is a bad spot in the high altiutude of Colorado. The Buffs are the better team.
Lost amid the hullabaloo and obvious upgrades at CU is the fact Deion Sanders made a couple of shrewd staff hires including Sean Lewis (OC) and Charles Kelly (DC). And it's obvious the new-look Buffs have belief in Coach Prime as their frenzied effort at TCU suggests. Meanwhile, let’s just say that Matt Rhule’s Nebraska debut was a bit less impressive than Deion’s, especially with ex-Georgia Tech QB Jeff Sims self-destructing with three bad picks in the gut-wrenching loss at Minnesota. This looks a long way from the days when Tom Osborne used to bring the Huskers into Boulder and roll up some big scorelines in the Big 8/early Big 12 days, and we'll risk a jump on the Deion bandwagon before it's too late
After an avalanche of early Colorado money, it's starting to flow on Nebraska. This is potentially one of the trap games of the season with all the national love being shown to Deion and his program. No offense to Coach Prime, but Matt Rhule is a far superior coach; Deion doesn't really coach -- he is the CEO and (amazing) recruiter. I worry about that horrid CU defense, but Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter are awesome (want Hunter on the Bears in 2025 draft, but they better not be picking that high) and will be the two best players on the field in the biggest game in Boulder since Gary Barnett's days or maybe Rick Neuheisel's. Just can't go contrarian at -2.5.
Nebraska does not have the playmakers to keep up with Shedeur Sanders, Travis Hunter and Dylan Edwards, especially not at altitude in Boulder. The Cornhuskers can try to play keep away all they want with Jeff Sims and the running game, but if the game is close late who do you trust more -- the program that loses close games as a matter of habit or the team with more self-confidnce than anyone else in the country?
Listen, I'm not sold that Colorado is some juggernaut after one win, but I'm not an idiot, either. Colorado in Deion Sanders' home debut against a Nebraska team that finds a new way to beat itself every week?
While the whole college football world gushes over Deion Sanders' team's win over TCU last week, I'll focus on the fact that TCU's defense apparently isn't all that great yet again. Meanwhile, Nebraska's defense was excellent against Minnesota last week, though their offense has a ways to go. To me, this game seems likely to be played in the low-to-mid 20s so let's fade the public perception that Colorado is the next USC in terms of scoring prowess.
A 10 a.m. local start after all that hoopla last week? Against a Nebraska team? The Huskers' Matt Rhule can coach 'em up. Under is the play.
We knew the Buffs had skill guys, and we knew the defense was terrible. What we learned is the offensive line can pass protect well enough. Colorado finds a way.
As we enter Week 2 Colorado is living on cloud nine and Nebraska just had it's heart ripped out on the last play of the game. Both teams feature brand new head coaches and I'm interested to see how they handle their boys this week. There's a chance Colorado comes down a bit and Nebraska bounces back...or Colorado blows Nebraska out. In both of those scenarios I like the Under. What I think happens is Nebraska can muddy this game up a bit and we see a clock that keeps running. Not to mention kickoff is set for 10am Mountain time. Hopefully we see a little sleepwalking in the 1st Half.
Colorado's offense will be a problem to deal with throughout the season. You have to expect their defense to settle in with each subsequent game. What's key here is their offense being so explosive, it'll actually help out their defense as teams will have to abandon their gameplan to play keep up.
You could say Colorado played with a cause in their first game at TCU last week. They rode the emotions and took advantage of a clunky defense. You could say the Buffs peaked and will not be able to match their performance. You could say this massive rating shake-up with Colorado makes them a play against this week. But I look at the positive sides of it all. Speed kills and the Buffs have lots of it and a QB who gets them the ball. Shedeur Sanders's 510-yard passing was a beautifully arranged symphony. For a kid in his first big road game of his career to look so polished was incredible. Nebraska is in trouble. Colorado covers.
Colorado was impressive offensively in their Week 1 upset win over TCU. I think Nebraska is a much-improved team as we bet them +7.5 in Week 1, but I believe solving this Colorado offense will be a tough task in the road environment that will be electric for the Sanders home debut. Ratings on these teams will vary widely for a few weeks, but I think Colorado is strong enough offensively in this matchup to secure another win to start the season.
Colorado comes off the big upset of the Horned Frogs to open the season. The Buffaloes' Shedeur Sanders threw for 510 yards and four touchdowns. Their offense looked better than expected and their defense, while looking shaky at times, stepped up when needed. Nebraska should have beaten the Gophers, if they had another offensive option other than QB Jeffery Sims. The Cornhuskers' defense may have a tough time containing Colorado’s offense.
