It's impossible not to pick up on the vibes the Raiders are putting out under interim HC Antonio Pierce. And Pierce knows having people like Adams want to stick around in Vegas will help his odds of getting the job. And the rookie QB got the memo. There will be volume and opportunity for the top WR vs a bad pass defense. Adams sounds as happy and amped to play as he'd been in a long time.
Although the term "good spot" for the Raiders could be considered an oxymoron, you'll never find a better one than this. The Raiders just cleaned house by firing their coach and quarterback, and now face a reeling Giants club and let one slip away against their in-state rival last week. This could be the best performance from the Raiders so far this season.
The lookahead line here was Raiders -2.5 and dropped a point after their abysmal showing on Monday Night Football that got Josh McDaniels fired. Teams tend to respond well to coach firings the following week with the weight of a failing coach off the players' shoulders. Aidan O'Connell gets his second start, and if he can protect the ball better than his debut (one pick, three fumbles), he has the weapons to outscore a Giants team without its top target and with a QB returning from a major injury. If Daniel Jones re-aggravates that injury, Brian Daboll has already shown he doesn't trust Tommy Devito to run the show. Baking that scenario in, I'll take the Raiders for a small play.
Mark Davis pink-slipped HC Josh McDaniels and GM Dave Ziegler on Tuesday night, with LB coach Antonio Pierce succeeding McDaniels on an interim basis for the Raid-ahs. (For what it's worth, the last time Davis made a mid-season change two years ago, Vegas ended up in the playoffs for interim Rich Bisaccia.) Jimmy G goes to the bench as well, replaced by Purdue rookie Aidan O'Connell, which hardly seems a downgrade at the moment. We do note that Vegas has proven it can beat bad teams...well, most of them (victims include Broncos, Packers, and Patriots...though there's also that loss to the Bears). And the Giants are bad even if Daniel Jones returns. Play Raiders
It’s a new day in Las Vegas with Josh McDaniels gone and Aidan O'Connell under center. Back in Week 4, O’Connell threw to Jacobs on 28.9% of his passes against the Chargers – and Jacobs had 8 catches for 81 yards. O'Connell has thrown to his RBs on 35.3% of his passes, that's THE most of any QB with at least 30 pass attempts in the NFL. Meanwhile, the Giants got exposed last week by Breece Hall after he caught 6 of 10 targets for 76 yards and a touchdown. Zach Wilson hurriedly got rid of the ball when the Giants blitzed him -- the Raiders could follow suit because the Giants are probably going to blitz Aidan O'Connell a lot.
Davante Adams is in the midst of the worst stretch of his HOF career. The Raiders have been downright dreadful on both sides of the ball and pulled the plug on HC Josh McDaniels this week. Teams tend to rally around the interim coach when that happens and if there was ever a spot for Adams to get back on track its this one. The Giants defense has been dreadful and have given up a ton of production to opposing WRs. Not to mention are missing one of their best players after trading DL Leonard Williams at the deadline to Seattle. Raiders QB Aiden O'Connel peppered Adams with targets in his only start of the season and I expect that to be the case Sunday.
The Raiders are in the vortex of a maelstrom right now after ownership cleaned house with Coach Josh McDaniels, the team's OC and GM all fired. And Jimmy Garoppolo apparently will be benched for rookie Aidan O'Connell. Hey, at least Mark Davis has that really cool haircut (not) and also owns the WNBA champion Aces. LV is also on a short week. The Giants could have a fully healthy offensive line with both Daniel Jones and Saquon Barkley also on the field for the first time since the first half of Week 1.
Despite the 2-6 record, this Giants defense is playing at an elite level. Neither Jimmy Garoppolo or Aidan O’Connell should be able to do much against this squad. Daniel Jones is returning for a Giants team desperate to turn things around, give me New York +2 in Vegas.
