Although both teams are missing key defensive pieces, this still rates to be a low-tempo grinder. The JEts have the worst passing offense in the NFL at the No. 24-ranked scoring offense (18.6 ppg). The Eagles pitched a shutout in the second half last week, while four of their five scoring drives ate up at least 10 plays. Take the Under.
At full strength, there may have been a case that the Jets defense could hold down the Eagles for a cover. In this spot, New York is getting a lot of credit coming off last week's road win now home against Philadelphia. This might be close for a half, but the Eagles are going to make life hell for Zach Wilson and Breece Hall with their own offense eventually shining through over 60 minutes for a double-digit road win.
While the Jets were thinking that maybe they deserved a ticker-tape parade in Manhattan down Broadway after beating the Broncos in the Nathaniel Hackett revenge game last Sunday, in truth it was Bronco feebleness that mostly determined the outcome. Not much from Zach Wilson, who reverted to his pre-Chiefs game form only to be bailed out by RB Breece Hall, who zoomed for 177 YR and scored on a 72-yard run in which he looked like he could have sped all of the way to Pikes Peak without getting touched. No such schedule breaks this week; on Sunday, it's the unbeaten Eagles. And while the Jalen Hurts-led offense still isn't quite clicking like it did last season, it's been good enough.
Just as the Jets started showing signs of life with a narrow loss to Kansas City and a win at Denver, they have been hit with a barrage of injuries. OT Alijah Vera Tucker, out for the season. Starting CBs Sauce Gardner and D.J. Reed, out for this game, along with dime DB Brandon Echols. Even special teams standout Justin Harden, a Pro Bowler, is on I.R. The Eagles are unbeaten straight-up, with wins by 11 and nine in the past three games. Perhaps New York can squeeze in under the spread, but this does not shape up as the week when Philly absorbs its first defeat against a decimated opponent.
Can the Jets offense make plays consistently against this Eagles defense? That is the biggest question there is to answer. Without a consistent run game vs this Eagles front, it'll put the onus on Zach Wilson and that receiving corps...which subsequently opens up Wilson to the Eagles pass rush. Bad matchup overall for the Jets.
Dallas Goedert had a rough start to the season and through the first four weeks had totaled just 88 yards. Goedert exploded for 117 in Week 5 and led the team in targets. The Eagles TE has elite route participation and gets a matchup against a Jets defense that has been significant TE funnel both this season and last season. Look for Goedert to take advantage of another plus match up.
In Week 4 the Jets hosted Kansas City and closed as 8.5-point underdogs. Now they're hosting undefeated Philly and getting less than a TD? With a limited passing attack led by Zach Wilson, New York needs a big game from Breece Hall to be competitive. That will be difficult against an Eagles defense allowing 3.4 yards per carry and an NFL-low 61.2 rushing yards per game. Jets right tackle Alijah Vera-Tucker tore his Achilles tendon in last Sunday's win in Denver, and left tackle Duane Brown (hip) is on IR. Jalen Carter and Philly's pass rush should dominate.
This is a massive mismatch between these two teams. The Eagles are rounding into form and their defense in the second half of their victory over the Rams was extremely impressive. Philly's offense is starting to open things up as well and had a balanced and effective attack. Meanwhile the Jets are due for a big let down after an emotional victory over Denver. The Eagles have a ferocious pass rush and run defense which should help at limiting Breece Hall and I just don't see Zach Wilson having success against the Eagles D. I think the Eagles win by double digits in a lopsided affair.
The Jets are coming off a big road win where they scored a season-high 31 points, but I'm not sure it's necessarily a net positive for their offense. That unit scored just one TD (Breece Hall's 72-yard romp) and went 0 for 5 in the red zone against what's shaping up to be a historically bad Broncos defense. They can hit big plays in the run game, but Philadelphia has allowed just 3.4 yards per rush so I'm not sure how the Jets score consistently here. The Jets defense hasn't been as good as anticipated, and a Philly offense that's rolled up 400+ yards in four straight should keep rolling. I have this line projected at Eagles -9 so I love the value.
