Understanding Public and Money
Expert Picks
The public is all over the Seahawks here, which is why the line has completely flipped, but I have to side with the road team sporting an MVP-candidate quarterback. While the Eagles are desperate for a big win, the Seahawks are building on three straight victories and coming off a bye week. Jordan Howard is out. Alshon Jeffrey and Nelson Agholor are out. Philly's active wide receivers have 14 combined catches this season, which means they will be relying on Zach Ertz and Miles Sanders. While I do not like that Seattle is without Jadeveon Clowney, it is still healthier and more capable in this spot with a bevy of wideouts to stretch the field. I have this as a pick 'em, so this is a gut play more than anything.
The normally great Eagles offensive line could be in for some trouble this week, as Lane Johnson has been ruled out and rookie Andre Dillard, a natural left tackle, is slated to fill in. The Seahawks will be fresh coming off their bye, and I like that we're following a good trend of road teams off the bye here. The Eagles defense has taken a big step forward over the last three weeks, but the offenses of the Pats, Bears and Bills aren't on the caliber of Russell Wilson's unit, which is first in pass DVOA and fourth overall. Don't fret the schedule change either, as Seattle is 9-1 in their last 10 games at 1 p.m. ET.
The Philadelphia Eagles are an infirmary ward at the moment. They're banged up at both tackle spots on the offensive line, and could be down both Jordan Howard and Alshon Jeffery again as well. Also, if we're being honest, Carson Wentz hasn't lit it up this season. Then there's Seattle, which has an MVP candidate in Russell Wilson, and is coming off a bye. It's in Philly, so the Eagles have to be favored, but that doesn't mean they should be.
The painfully erratic Eagles lost to New England last week despite holding Tom Brady and friends to fewer than 300 yards. QB Carson Wentz again faltered against top competition, taking five sacks and missing numerous open receivers on crucial fourth-quarter drives. The Seahawks are the better team, but this is a bad spot off a bye after their dramatic win against the 49ers. The Eagles are in dire need of a quality performance in order to keep pace with Dallas, which plays at New England. They also need to placate a fan base that is frustrated with the underachieving club.
The Seahawks are 5-0 ATS on the road this year (depending on the line you got versus Atlanta), and the Eagles have guys hurt on the offensive line. Jadeveon Clowney is doing to have a field day. I don't like the way Carson Wentz is playing. I don't think the Eagles are a playoff team. Back Seattle.
The blame for every Eagles loss always falls at the feet of others and not QB Carson Wentz. In all honesty, he has to play better - especially against the NFL's stronger teams. Wentz has another opportunity to do so this week. But with the Seahawks coming off a bye and possessing an MVP candidate in QB Russell Wilson, I don't think Wentz - or the Eagles - can get the job done.
