They play this one tonight at the MLS stadium on the Kansas side of Kansas City as the Jayhawks will play all of their home games in KC this season, split between this venue and Arrowhead on the Missouri side. A rematch of the Guaranteed Rate Bowl in Phoenix last December won and covered by Jayhawks 49-36. That, however, was a tired UNLV, especially defensively, and not anticipating that sort of a shootout tonight. Lots of tech angles supporting the Rebels; Barry Odom is now 12-4 vs. the line and 6-2 as dog, plus 7-0 vs. spread as visitor, since arriving last year. UNLV has also now covered eleven straight visiting Power 5 conference opposition after the Aug. 31 win at Houston. Play UNLV
This is a rematch of last year's Guaranteed Rate Bowl that saw the Jayhawks break open what had been a close contest for a 49-36 victory. Although QB Jayden Maiava transferred to USC, the Rebels still appear to have plenty of firepower. The Jayhawks lost a grinder to a stout Illinois club last week, but should find offense easier to come by in this one.
Kansas defeated the Rebels in last year’s Guaranteed Rate Bowl, 49-36. UNLV has covered the last seven road game and nine of their last 10 overall. This game is being played in Kansas City and isn’t, technically, a true home game for the Jayhawks since their stadium is being renovated. Kansas is 4-6 ATS in their last 10 as favorites and 1-4 ATS as favorites of more than nine points.
Kansas lost on the road last week to an Illinois team that's better than expected, and I expect a much better performance against UNLV. The Rebels defense was torn apart by KU last season, and the majority of its offensive output came in one game against Utah Tech.
Last week Kansas had the lead at Illinois 17-13 and then Illinois scored the final 10 points to win the game. Illinois played some good defense and won the game. Now UNLV comes in at 2-0 with the win over Houston to their credit and Kansas comes in a little gun shy. But they need to prove something and they're at home. UNLV had a chance against Kansas in a bowl game last year and lost 49-36 with Kansas passing for 449 yards and running for 142 yards. Jason Bean was a quarterback then, and Jalon Daniels is the quarterback now. Kansas is less of a favorite than they were last year. Kansas laying the points.
While the talk has been about the Go-Go Offense at UNLV, the Rebels defense this year has been the true story. They are outstanding in the secondary and do a great job of getting off the field. With the way their offense can challenge a defense, expect this one to be a lot closer than people think.
Kansas laid an egg on the offensive side of the ball in its loss to Illinois in Week 2, but I'm a believer that the Jayhawks are far better than what they showed. Quarterback Jalon Daniels is experienced and talented, and I expect him to bounce back. UNLV hasn't really been tested yet, but its offense has looked explosive through two weeks. This is a game where I could see both teams finishing with team totals in the 30's.
