Understanding Public and Money
Austin Reaves was hard on himself following the Lakers' Game 1 loss, and I like him to respond in a big way Tuesday. LA needs production from someone besides Luka Doncic, and Reaves is the obvious choice. He'll play 35-40 minutes. He continues to shoot it well from beyond the arc. In April, Reaves shot an eye-popping 52.9 percent drom deep.
A move that was questioned by some was the Timberwolves decision to trade KAT and bring in Julius Randle. It took some time to mesh but Randle has adapted to playing within the Timberwolves system. He had a quiet sixteen points in game one, and flourished from beyond the arc where he went four of six. Expect Randle to continue to knock down threes, but also work the paint more. Take Randle’s over in game two.
If there was ever a spot for the zig-zag in the NBA Playoffs, this is it. Thumped 117-95 by the T-wolves in Game One, the Lake Show was embarrassed, overrun by Minnesota's physical play. LeBron James looked a step slow and strangely overmatched. King James can do better than 19 points, and LA can surely do better on defense after the hot Wolves (winners of 18 of their last 22) hit better than 51% from the floor. Ant Edwards (22 points) and Julius Randle (16 points) weren't even the top guns for the T-wolves, that being Jaden McDaniels with 25. We saw the zig-zag work with the Pistons and Clippers last night. Play Lakers.
FanDuel. Naz Reid had a fantastic Game 1, scoring 23 points in 31 minutes. This season, when Anthony Edwards, Rudy Gobert and Julius Randle are all active, Reid averaged 13.3 points and cleared this line in 39 of 64 games (including 26 of the last 38). This series is a tough matchup for Rudy Gobert, who struggles when teams go small ball. Reid is a more natural fit, and provides the floor spacing that Edwards needs.
The Lakers need to win Game 2 before the series shifts to Minnesota. Despite their loss in Game 1, Luka Doncic scored 37 points. He attempted 22 shots across 40 minutes, 10 of which came from behind the arc. Dating back to the regular season, he has scored at least 31 points in 10 of his last 17 games. When he faced the Timberwolves in the playoffs last year, Doncic had at least 32 points in four of the five games. In the other, he had 28 points. With a hefty usage rate and a ton of minutes likely coming his way, take this over for Doncic.
The Lakers play a lot of small lineups. Jaxson Hayes logged eight minutes in Game 1 and Alex Len played three minutes in garbage time. Those were the only two centers to even take the floor for them in the game. Dorian Finney-Smith played 32 minutes off the bench, with Gabe Vincent logging the next most minutes off the bench at 25. With the Lakers playing so small, Anthony Edwards was able to grab eight rebounds. During the regular season, he recorded at least six rebounds in all four games that he played the Lakers. Look for Edwards to remain productive on the boards in Game 2.
This line is simply too low for Anthony Edwards who has consistently elevated his level of play and scoring in the playoffs. I also like that the Lakers are significant favorites here and Ant tends to be his most aggressive when playing from behind. I also like that Ant averaged 29 PPG on the road this season. I consider Ant a top 5 player in the league and I like his chances of reminding everyone with a big performance tonight versus Luka and Lebron.
