I expected Derrick White to play closer to 25-30 minutes tonight and considering he is averaging close to 19 PRA in the playoffs, it is coming at a nice discount. The theme after Boston's game 1 loss has been spacing and I expect less of Boston's two big lineup as a result.
Boston is winning this game. You know it. I know it. The American people know it. The Celtics fell asleep at the wheel in Game 1 and got caught. This isn’t the first time they have done that this postseason. But I also like Miami to cover. So if you want to get weird and try to middle this game, I won't talk you off it.
Boston fell asleep at the wheel in Game 1 and got caught. This isn’t the first time the Celtics have done that this postseason. I fully expect the Celtics to even the series tonight. But with so many points available, I’ll grab those with Miami and Jimmy Butler, who is playing like a man on a mission.
He isn't the biggest name, but Marcus Smart has been one of the most important players on the Celtics. His contributions are far more than what shows up in the box score, but hey typically does a good job filling that up too. While he hasn't finished over 16.5 points and rebounds in the last two games, he's averaging 19.5 per game in the playoffs and has gone over this total in 10 of 13 games. Furthermore, while he's averaging 19.5 points and rebounds per game overall, following Celtics losses that number has climbed to 23.8. When his team has needed a win, Smart has come through each time.
Jimmy Butler has failed to dish out six assists in 7 of 11 postseason games this season. He averaged 5.3 APG in the regular season and is averaging 5.5 APG in the playoffs. Boston surrendered the second fewest assists in the NBA this season at only 22.8 per game. Butler averaged 6 assists in his series against the Knicks but he was almost exclusively doubled by New York, something Boston just isn't willing to concede. Considering the low game total, some blowout potential, and that the Heat are likely to be playing from behind in this game, I suspect Jimmy will be focused more on scoring rather than playmaking.
We played the over on this same total for Game 1. It cashed with ease when Jaylen Brown turned the ball over six times. That marked his fourth straight game with at least three turnovers. The Heat are an aggressive defensive team and Brown is a shakey dribbler, which has contributed to him turning the ball over 20 times against them in four total meetings. Until this line moves up to 3.5, I’m going to keep playing the over.
I make this total 213 which is basically where it closed in game one. I think the adjustment is a little too extreme here considering the stakes of the game (must win for Boston) and the teams overall defensive ratings. I don't expect Miami to shoot over 50 percent from 3, and I don't expect as many turnovers on the Boston side. I'm on the Under just like last night in LAL/DEN.
The Celtics are 3-0 following their previous home losses in these playoffs, and I'm about 97.4 percent sure they win Friday -- I'll probably be playing Jayson Tatum to have at least three made three-pointers and Celtics to win at -145 on a prop -- but you simply have to take this many points after what we saw in Game 1. "Heat Culture" is a bit irritating to hear over and over, frankly, but it's real. Thanks to Pat Riley, it's one of the most professional franchises in worldwide sports. My point being that the team is too well coached/trained by Erik Spoelstra to simply punt on Game 2 -- as we have seen with other teams this postseason after taking 1-0 road lead -- because it already stole home-court advantage in Game 1.
What are we doing here? The Heat beat the Celtics by seven points in Game 1, dominating in the second half. And yet, they are even bigger underdogs for Game 2? I’d be shocked if the Celtics lost this game. If they do, the series might be over with the Heat up 2-0 heading to Miami. However, the Heat are not going to take their foot off the gas just because they won Game 1. This is a team that is wired for the playoffs, especially when they are underdogs. Look them to keep things close enough to cover this big number.
