The line has been moving in Texas State’s favor. The Sun Devils run defense has been excellent to start the season, holding their opponents to an average of 32 yards over the first two weeks. Texas State splits the carries with their running backs while Jordan McCloud also has the ability to run, rushing for two touchdowns last week. The Sun Devils are a run heavy team and both teams have the ability to make this into a ground and pound type of game.
This line is Arizona State -1 at most books, but even if the juice is a little heavy, I'll gladly take the Sun Devils getting points. Texas State is a G5 darling but hasn't faced competition as impressive as the Mississippi State team the Devils beat last week.
To this point, the main attraction around San Marcos is the biggest Buc-ee's in Texas with its 96 gas pumps. Now, however, Texas State football is elbowing into the picture, as the Bobcats have become a new flavor of the month Last week's demolition of a downgraded UTSA side has sent the hype into overdrive...too much, perhaps? Granted, well-traveled QB Jordan McCloud, on his fourth school in as many years and off of 35 TD passes at JMU last fall, has them further excited in Hill Country. Still, ASU has been beating better opposition (Wyo and Mississippi State), and the Sun Devils look upgraded, featuring punishing RB Cam Skattebo, who bruised the Bulldogs for 262 YR in a 30-23 win last Saturday. Play ASU
We have seen a swift adjustment twice on the Arizona State and Texas State matchup. Arizona State has had the exposure in nationally televised games and won in a big way over Wyoming and Mississippi State. Yet, their tailback Cam Skattebo carried a heavy work load of 33 carries for 262 yards. His durability could be in question on a short week. Additionally, Texas State has an uncanny ability to put up points that is going to test ASU’s defense. Take the home team here in Texas State.
Look at how the Bobcats are built along both sides of the line of scrimmage. When you're able to compete in the trenches vs Power 4 teams, it gives you a chance. Add to the fact they are fresh off of thumping UTSA, and get Arizona State at home is going to give them a huge boost here in this matchup.
Texas State has 14 starters returning and they got that Sun Belt player of the year from James Madison QB Jordan McCloud. This is their third home game in a row and perhaps the best of the three, it's against ASU. Arizona State only has seven returning starters and one of them is Cam Scattebo the star running back who rushed 33 times for 262 yards last week against Mississippi State. The thing about him was his longest run was only 39 yards. They just ran. They had 57 rushes for 346 yards and only 69 yards passing and held the ball for over 40 minutes. Sounds like they found a game plan. They can do something similar again against Texas State. Arizona State covers.
