The Falcons have only one more win than Arizona, but they’re 8-7 against the spread. The Cardinals are 4-11 and aren't even that good, although their defense has played as if it’s all on them knowing the quarterback isn’t going to do much. They have their fourth different starter in the last four weeks, with journeyman David Blough getting the call. Arizona will be without DeAndre Hopkins, Rondale Moore, Budda Baker, Zach Allen and some cornerbacks. The Falcons have stayed Under in their last four games because they can’t score with rookie Desmond Ridder under center. Lots of kicks and bad QB play in this contest.
The Falcons’ limitations at quarterback haven’t exactly helped London shine during his rookie season. However, with Kyle Pitts (knee) sidelined, the Falcons have at least been trying to force the ball to London more down the stretch. Over the last three games, he has been targeted 32 times. He has made the most of his added opportunities, posting at least six receptions and 70 receiving yards in all three of those games. A matchup against a Cardinals team that has allowed the seventh-most passing yards per game in the league leaves London with a good chance to have another big stat line.
So instead of a matchup of ex-Heisman winners and Top 2 picks in QBs Kyler Murray and Marcus Mariota, we get David Blough vs. Desmond Ridder. I doubt Mrs. Blough will even watch this. At least Ridder has some potential. I'm not sure what the worst all-time QB matchup is, but this has to be close (I'm pretty sure the Bears' Craig Krenzel had to be on a short list in one of his five 2014 stars). Arizona just ruled out DeAndre Hopkins as well. In theory, both these coaches could treat this like a meaningless bowl game and just say what Tom Cruise's character famously said in Risky Business (What the ... ) and do trick play after trick play, etc., and it could be a shootout. But I can't possibly not go under with this QB matchup. Plus, Atlanta runs the ball all day anyways.
Surprise! Cardinals QB David Blough was informed Friday morning he would open this game. He's the fourth Arizona starter behind center in five weeks. Blough has not thrown a pass since last season and owns a career 0-5 record as a starter. Well, he at least has stellar WR DeAndre Hopkins to bail him out, right? Maybe not. Hopkins is iffy with an ailing knee. For the Falcons, rookie QB Desmond Ridder gets the call. The Falcons have managed a mere 29 points in his two starts.
This matchup features two teams playing out the string, so it's impossible to know the motivation of either. In those situations, it's better to be catching points than laying them. I made this pick expecting Colt McCoy under center for Arizona, but it turns out his concussion symptoms have returned, and Kliff Kingsbury has decided to start David Blough, who joined the practice squad after the team lost Kyler Murray, over Trace McSorley. It's obviously a tough blow to those of us who already played Arizona, but I'll say I definitely wouldn't be looking to lay more than 4 points with the Falcons against anyone with their lack of a home-field advantage.
