The Packers defense has been blasted over the last two weeks, but against bad offenses, it has absolutely dominated this season. That's certainly the way I would describe Chicago ("bad"), even with Justin Fields back under center. Green Bay is healthy, home and in primetime where it has dominated both straight up and against the spread with Aaron Rodgers behind center. It has the quarterbacking, playmaking, defending and coaching advantages coming into this game. Further pushing the Packers forward as worthy of a double-digit spread is the fact that the Bears are 1-6 ATS since mid-October. Back the Pack.
Chicago’s offense, ranked 30th in scoring and yards permitted, might be crummy but the team engages often in points-filled games. Three of the past five have spat out 55, 56 and 55 points. The Packers’ offense was middling most of the season before contributing to games of 65 and 64 points in the most recent outings. The bye week should help QB Aaron Rodgers and his throbbing toe. Relatively mild weather will not impede the offenses.
The spotlight Sunday night will be on Bears rookie quarterback Justin Fields. Statistically, he has struggled, but Sunday can be a turning point for his season. Fields should be a bit more relaxed, as the Packers will be the first team Fields has seen twice. Expect the Bears to have a safe approach but be able to build off a 24-14 loss to the Packers earlier this season. Take Chicago to keep this within the double-digit spread.
The Bears are expected to get back rookie Justin Fields for this game, but I'm not sure that's the best idea, as his health should be the No. 1 priority in a lost season. He'll face a Packers team that's 10-2 ATS this year (including 5-0 at home), one that has won 10 straight primetime games, going 9-1 ATS during that stretch. I want to believe that Aaron Rodgers' "I own you" comment from the first game will rally the Chicago defense to have a big game, but with the Bears 1-6 ATS and SU over their last seven games, I'm not sure how much fight they have left, especially with the players knowing a coaching change is inevitable. Packers roll yet again.
