The Bengals have not spotted an opponent double digits on the road in, well, pretty much forever. Then again, they have not played anyone in awhile in the desperate straits of the Jets. The contrast in QBs says it all. Joe Burrow, the 2020 No. 1 overall draft pick on his way to a stellar career, versus Mike White, a 2018 fifth-rounder whose first action of this season was last Sunday in relief. Worse, New York York WR Corey Davis (hip) is doubtful. The Bengals’ D is fourth-best at yards given up per play. Cincy WR Ja’Marr Chase is good for at least one chunk play.
Riding high after their blowout victory over the Ravens, one would expect the Bengals to experience some sort of 'letdown' performance against the Jets. Fortunately for Cincinnati, the Jets will be starting Mike White instead of their rookie QB Zach Wilson, who is out due to a knee injury. There isn't enough continuity on the Jets offense to even entertain the possibility of an upset here. Expect the Bengals to roll once again.
Mike White was a fifth-round pick out of Western Kentucky in 2018. He had never attempted a regular-season pass until Sunday's blowout loss in New England. Now he'll start versus a stout Bengals' defense in Week 8. On the other side, Joe Burrow gets to face a Jets' defense that does not have an interception this season. New York had two weeks to prepare for the Pats and gave up 551 yards, 54 points and 17 explosive plays. Robert Saleh is in over his head right now. I like this line at anything under 10.
It's wild that you can make the Bengals 9.5-point road favorites in any matchup and the market is fine with it, but after last week, it's impossible to deny the Bengals are one of the better teams in the league. And the Jets reached new lows against the Patriots. Not only will they have to contend with starting Mike White at quarterback, but the defense has allowed 1,000 yards over its last two games to not the greatest offenses (Falcons, Patriots) and an average of 30 first downs over its last three games. With the Bengals defense playing well (third in points allowed per drive), this has all the makings of a blowout for the upstart Bengals.
