Not overly fond of the hook here, but the Titans are the right side. Some have decided not to trust Tennessee simply because it lost to the Jets, but that’s short-sighted given the Titans’ red zone struggles in the game were the biggest reason for the defeat. With AJ Brown cleared and Derrick Henry still in the backfield against an opponent he has dominated historically, this offense should have little issue putting up points. While I don’t buy the entire narrative around Urban Meyer, there’s been nothing to prove that the team has his back, which is what you’d expect for a “rallying around the coach” wager. I'd prefer -4 over -4.5, but comfortable enough to lay it.
The Jaguars last won straight-up 20 games ago. As long as they enter as a modest underdog, the opponent must be the play. Tennessee welcomes back half of its dynamic WR duo, A.J. Brown, who missed last week’s OT setback to the Jets. The Titans figure to unleash tireless RB Derrick Henry, who has amassed 452 yards in 96 carries in the past three outings, two of which went to overtime. While reports that players have lost faith in first-year coach Urban Meyer likely are somewhat exaggerated, the mood in Jacksonville might be unsettling.
I see the Titans using this as a "get right" game in the division and looking to make a statement. With both AJ Brown and Julio Jones seemingly on track to play, that should help. Unfortunately for the Titans, they're still missing some key parts on defense, and this Jaguars offense showed signs of life last week. We're going to get more points in this one than the total suggests.
This is more a play against Jacksonville than a play on Tennessee, although the Titans should get back their top two wide receivers in A.J. Brown and Julio Jones. Both teams’ yards-per-play number on offense and defense look almost identical. However, I have Tennessee’s offense rated 14th and Jacksonville’s 30th, with both defenses in the bottom five. To add to the drama, Jaguars coach Urban Meyer was caught hanging out in Ohio after his team lost to Cincinnati last week. Do you think Bill Belichick would ever waste a second while preparing for his next game? No shot! Where there's smoke, there's fire, and Jacksonville is smoking. The Titans will be hungry after their overtime loss to the New York Jets.
I bet big against the Titans last week vs. the Jets with both AJ Brown and Julio Jones sidelined, and Tennessee did lose. However, the Titans are 3-0 SU & ATS following an upset loss since start of 2020. Brown looks as if he at least will play Sunday. Ryan Tannehill and Jacksonville native Derrick Henry historically torch the Jaguars, who are a mess on and off the field on a 19-game skid and the Urban Meyer dirty dancing situation. I do think the Jags on extra rest hang tight for a while but end up losing by a TD.
When everyone jumps off the Titans bandwagon is when you should actually get on. Mike Vrabel is lethal in these situations and just look at Derrick Henry against his hometown Jacksonville, he has over 1k yards rushing against the Jaguars in his career alone and double-digit touchdowns. Yes, the Titans OL has big problems and we don't know (yet) the status of AJ Brown or Julio Jones, but back-against-the-wall-coming-off-a-loss Mike Vrabel doesn't mess around in these games. And don't get me started on the other team's head coach.
A week ago, the Titans were considered touchdown-plus favorite at the Jets and about the same on the lookahead against the Jaguars. But key injuries to Tennessee's receivers combined with a lack of confidence in their defense caused me to jump on the ugly Jets. After the Titans lost that game in overtime, the market swung wildly away from Tennessee this week, dropping the line to -3.5. We should've jumped on it then, and even before hearing any positive news about the WRs here, I think we have to jump in now with the distraction of Urban Meyer taking his team away from fully preparing to play a football game. Ryan Tannehill can have success against this bad defense no matter his receivers.
