The Miami Heat’s success in the postseason has been due to their embracement of a complete team philosophy. Outside of Jimmy Butler anyone else can be the key contributor on a nightly basis. This has led to a two point drop off on Adebayo’s regular season average in the postseason. Take his under on game five.
Eric Spoelstra moved Kyle Lowry to the bench initially for health reasons after the star PG returned from a knee injury on March 11. "Demoting" a player with a $85M contract and ending his streak of 677-straight starts was controversial at the time, but has turned into a brilliant move. With Lowry leading the second unit, Miami has jumped from a bottom third team in bench production to the top unit in the league. Lowry is averaging 28 minutes/game in this playoff series, up from 21 minutes per in the previous series against the Bucks. He has three turnovers to 20 assists against the Knicks, and has scored double-digit points in 5 of his last 7 games.
It would be human nature for the Heat to let down a bit here after two easy wins at home and knowing a potential Game 6 awaits in south Florida if they don't close it out tonight. Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo are banged up. I really don't know how the Heat are doing this without Tyler Herro and Victor Oladipo -- maybe the Knicks simply aren't very good. I do like them for one last stand at home, though. The Heat were the worst team in the NBA in terms of covering after an SU win in the regular season. That hasn't been the case in the playoffs but maybe they revert. I'm not sure Tom Thibodeau is back should New York get routed tonight. Thibs always wears out his welcome in a few years. I think he even plays the ball boy 43 minutes per game. The public is crushing Heat +3.5 and that's probably the smart play, but personally I don't want to sweat some late free throws if the Knicks are up 3 or something like that.
Miami's only loss in this series was in Game 2 when Jimmy Butler supposedly could’ve played and choose not to. Well, Butler is back Wednesday and that’s trouble for New York. I thought the Knicks played great in Game 4 in the third quarter and they weren’t able to dent Miami’s lead. That moment, to me, indicated this series is over.
SportlineAI is predicting13.5 rebounds and assists for Bam Adebayo. Throughout the play-in and playoffs Adebayo has gone over this number 8 of 11 times including 3 of 4 in the New York Knicks series. He is averaging 13.9 rebounds and assists in the playoffs and play-in and 12.38 in the Knicks series. Join Early Edge in 5 at 4pm ET for more.
The Knicks return home on the brink of elimination. They should be fired up right out of the gate. However, the only game that they have won in this series is the one that Jimmy Butler didn’t play. He took the floor in Game 1 in New York and led the Heat to a seven-point victory. I can’t pick against Butler in the playoffs, so give me the points with the Heat.
Julius Randle's PRA line was as low as 33.5 at the beginning of this series and during the Knicks opening round series against Cleveland. In fairness to Randle he has performed better versus the Heat but is not exactly lighting it up with averages of 18/11/4 on 43/22/68 shooting splits. This is actually Randle's best playoff series from a statistical standpoint. He is struggling in the postseason and has eclipsed this combo line just once while averaging 27.8 PRA, compared to averaging 39.2 PRA in the regular season. Bam Adebayo has done a great job defending Randle in this series. There has been some chatter that Obi Toppin may play a few additional minutes today, which could come at the expense of Randle as well.
