Detroit came back late to win both games Casey Mize started thus far. The Rangers have been hitting .272 with a .764 OPS against righties to behind the season while Detroit has struggled, hitting .212 with a .616 OPS. The Rangers are without Adolis Garcia this afternoon, but rest Corey Seager and Wyatt Langford back while the Tigers are without their RBI leader Mark Canha.
The Rangers have not had a day off in a while and probably need Gray to give them some length to help out the bullpen. Detroit isn't hitting much and Gray's total pitch count has risen in each successive start so I think he should open the sixth inning on the mound unless of course he is shelled.
Always like to have an opinion if possible on standalone matinees. I liked the Tigers to win the AL Central this season and maybe they will but they definitely need another bat. Thankfully, we still won on their runline yesterday despite being shut out. Texas did use all its high-leverage relievers while Detroit didn't really so that might factor in here. Rangers starter Jon Gray has struggled in two of three this year and it's his first away. Should mean a bit more to Tigers starter and former No. 1 overall pick Casey Mize as he pitches at home for the first time since April 2022 due to TJS. The Rangers are resting two key hitters in Adolis Garcia and Jonah Heim.
I'm backing the Rangers again today as Corey Seager and Wyatt Langford should be back in the lineup. I have Texas winning 57 percent of simulations which makes this line -133. Casey Mize has struggled with hard contact most of his career and he will again this season. You can find this at -118 on SuperBook.
Jon Gray has struggled to begin the season and has yet to eclipse 5 IP through his first three starts. Last season Gray pitched at least 5.1 IP in 18 of 29 starts. He gets a favorable matchup againt a Detroit lineup that possesses the 4th lowest OPS, in addition to the eighth highest K rate against opposing right handed pitching. I llike Grays chances to get in at least 5.1 IP.
