With the massive line switch, I was waiting to see if there would be a heavy list of Louisville inactives before kickoff. Alas, it is just a lot of action on Miami. D'Eriq King's immense talent is unquestioned, but it's not like the Cardinals are slouches with Malik Cunningham slinging the ball. Ultimately, I do believe the Canes defense will lead them to plenty of wins this season, but a home favorite-turned-underdog looking for revenge that matches up well against an offense still finding its footing is too attractive to pass up. This should be a high-scoring affair, and I like Louisville to match Miami whenever necessary to pull out the win. The two points are just a cushion.
In prior years this would have been a typical letdown spot for the Hurricanes, but grad transfer quarterback D’Eriq King changes that. Grab Miami to win the spotlight game of the day.
This could be one of the more entertaining games of the early season. It's difficult to explain the 3.5-point line move on this one after the Cardinals opened at -2.5. The Hurricanes blew out Louisville at home last year but their roster has been gutted by the opt-outs of several important players. Moreover, Miami just isn't good in these spots of late. It struggled with UAB in its opener before pulling away late. Louisville coach Bob Satterfield should have his team prepared for the big stage and his quarterback, Micale Cunninghamd, could outplay Miami's more heralded D'Eriq King.
This game will feature two of the best and most exciting quarterbacks in the country in Miami's D'Eriq King and Louisville's Micale Cunningham. Louisville's defense was the biggest surprise in Week 1, and that was a big question mark heading into the season. Meanwhile Miami's offense is still working itself out from a consistency standpoint. And that gives me the confidence to trust Louisville.
Louisville's Micale Cunningham is my fourth-highest rated quarterback. Last year the Cardinals had a median score of 35-35 at home and 34-35 for all games. Cunningham threw three touchdown passes against Western Kentucky. Miami's D'Eriq King, the Houston grad transfer, looked very good in his first game as a Hurricane. King has a streak of 16 straight games with a passing and rushing touchdown. Offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee was brought in to run a no huddle up-tempo offense.
Miami ran the ball all over UAB in its season-opening win. A UAB defense that, by standard metrics, and advanced ones, has had a stellar rush defense the last few years. Louisville has not. The Cardinals had one of the worst run defenses in the country last season and it's an area Miami will be all too eager to exploit Saturday night.
The Hurricanes offense didn’t click as much as I expected against UAB, which is concerning heading into what will likely be a shootout against the Cardinals. Maybe the Hurricanes held quarterback D’Eriq King back a little bit, but not enough to go point-for-point with Micale Cunningham and Co. The junior signal-caller for Louisville had 343 passing yards, 24 rushing yards and four total touchdowns last week. When you pair him with running back Javian Hawkins and a talented trio of wide receivers including Tutu Atwell, Dez Fitzpatrick and Braden Smith, there won’t be any chance the ‘Canes defense will keep them in check.
