There’s a lot to like about the Gators this season, but almost all of it can be undone by their biggest question mark: an inexperienced offensive line. Feleipe Franks is back after a tremendous final four games to 2018, and he’s joined by a talented a set playmakers. The defense features two of the best cornerbacks in the country and veteran ends. The Canes have similar OL concerns along with a redshirt freshman QB in Jarren Williams. Defensively, they are stout as well. The difference for me is that UF showed what it can do at the end of last season, while UM is looking to find itself under a new coach. Look for a lot of running by the Gators to keep the ball away from the Canes.
One team has a freshman QB making his first college start. The other has an experienced QB who took a leap forward. What do they have in common? Both will be playing QB behind inexperienced offensive lines going against aggressive defensive fronts. I expect both offenses to keep things conservative, and both defenses to to take advantage.
The Hurricanes just settled in on their starting QB for the upcoming season, and it's neither N'Kosi Perry or Tate Martell. But instead it's redshirt freshman Jarren Williams. He'll have a tough task, as he faces a Gators defense that returns eight starters. Things could get rough for the young Williams. A saving grace for the Canes however, could be their defense, which figures to be strong once again. That will keep the game close early, but expect the improved Feleipe Franks and the Gators offense to hit their rhythm in the second half, pulling away in the fourth quarter.
Points will be at a premium in this one, as both defenses will live in the opposition's backfield. Because of that, expect very few sustained drives, disjointed offenses and enough slop to fill Bay Lake at Disney World. This feels more like a 21-17 game than a 30-20 "shootout" (sarcasm very much intended). Go Under.
The buzz around Miami has been about quarterback Jarren Williams since the spring, so it's no surprise he won the quarterback competition. Don't be scared by the unknown. The kid can play -- at least enough for Miami to hang. Both offensive lines have questions and are going up against fast and physical fronts. Gators quarterback Feliepe Franks will outlast Williams, but the 'Canes will hang around and cover in a sloppy, sloppy game.
Young Miami QB Jarren Williams gets no soft landing for his debut as a starter. Williams, whose only experience is mopping up in a 77-0 win and who nearly transferred in the offseason, confronts a defense that was ranked 18th in points allowed per game (19.5) last year. His counterpart, Feleipe Franks, caught fire late in 2018 as the Gators averaged 45.0 points in their final four games. The Florida offensive line must be rebuilt, but the receiving corps mostly is back. New Miami coach Manny Diaz, a former assistant, gets scant time to prepare for this challenging, ultra-early matchup.
I think the Hurricanes will see their rating rise quickly with new head coach Manny Diaz and a new spread offense run by former Alabama QB coach Dan Enos. Jarren Williams won the QB job, beating out Ohio State transfer Tate Martel. In this neutral-field spot, besides liking the Miami offense and expecting the Hurricanes to move the ball effectively, I'm concerned about the Gators' offensive line early on, with only one starter returning. They had a balanced attack last season that rushed for 213 ypg behind five returning starters. Take the points with Miami.
