We could use a bit of drama in these Finals series in both the NBA and NHL. Unless you're a fan of the Celtics or the Panthers, with the latter looking to take complete control of the Stanley Cup finals tonight. Nothing from what we have seen in the matchup this campaign (in which Florida is 4-0 and outscoring Edmonton 17-5, including regular season) suggests the Oilers can recover. The Panthers have smothered the vaunted Edmonton attack which has had trouble generating shots, much less quality attempts, in the first two games, explaining the mere one goal scored, and Sergei Bobrovsky is such a blockade in goal that he is odds-on to win the Conn Smythe. We have a Game 3 here with the Oilers down 0-2, and while I lean their way for a win, I feel even better about goals. Edmonton should be desperate, and that aggressiveness should open up scoring chances on both ends. The Oilers home games this postseason have averaged 7.0 goals per game, and I'm liking our first over of the series to hit tonight. McDavid and Tkachuk are my two favorites to find the back of the net.
I will admit this might be me being more of a hopeful fan that we get a good series -- somewhat like picking the Mavericks last night -- as Florida is simply suffocating that high-powered Edmonton offense at center ice. The Oilers' Big 3 of Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl and Zach Hyman has one more point than me and you. Maybe having the last line change at home helps. It will be a zoo at Rogers Place for the team's first home Cup game in 18 years. And 11 of the past 14 teams in the Finals to fall down 2-0 won Game 3. Would like this a lot more if Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov sits after leaving Game 2. But he's probably playing.
The Florida Panthers have not played a road game outside the Eastern time zone since March 12th. They experienced a 3-hour flight delay due to severe storms and will have to play less than 24 hours after arriving in Canada late Wednesday night. With the Oilers down 2-0 in the series, the urgency and the home crowd will propel Edmonton to victory. They won't commit 45 penalty minutes again, that is for sure.
