I'm going to buck the trend on this one, as I believe the Avs will bounce back in Game 2. This Colorado team is far too talented to make another Round 1 exit this year, but if they fall behind 0-2, it likely will happen. Looks for the trio of Nathan MacKinnon, Mikko Rantanen, and Cale Makar to come out strong.
Colorado head coach Jared Bender is proving to be loyal to a fault with Alexandar Georgiev set to start again in net for the Avs after surrendering 7 goals in Game 1. The Avs have proven that they can score against the Jets, and Georgiev has proven he can't be trusted. The over looks safe here.
Can't remember the last time I turned down playing an Under 6.5 to play an Over 6 but how can anyone trust Avs netminder Alexandar Georgiev the way he has been playing for a few weeks? While I doubt he allows seven himself again as in Game 1, I expect the Jets to get to at least four off him. If so, we surely do no worse than a push. Colorado simply has no other healthy options in net right now.
Listen, I'll go small-brained and bet over 6 in a series that saw 13 total goals in their first game. Winnipeg won 7-6, and now six straight games between the Jets and Avalanche have seen 6+ goals and all four this year. The pace on Sunday night was blistering, and with Colorado likely pushing to avoid an 0-2 hole, I'm expecting another fun game.
I'll be willing to bet anyone that Colorado will not score six goals again in the series and lose like it did in Game 1. But therein lies the reason for fading the Avs as like we did Sunday: Goaltending. In a perfect world, no way struggling Alexandar Georgiev gets another start but may have to because Justus Annunen is ill. Too many questions, and we'll back the team with Connor Hellebuyck even if the likely Vezina winner wasn't great himself in the opener. He did face 46 shots. “You’re not tagging any of those goals on him,” Coach Rick Bowness said. “Some of them had seeing eyes. Some of them were bouncing all over the place."
NHL playoffs are one of those things where when your Game 1 read delivers, there is rarely a reason to not return to it. Such is the case here with Winnipeg, who grabbed an exciting win over the Avs at home on Sunday night. It's the Jets at home that guides us here once again, as Colorado is now 19-23 on the road this season, while Winnipeg is 28-14 in their own barn. The Jets have poured on 14 goals in their past two meetings with the Avs and are 4-0 against them on the year. Give me the home team again on Tuesday.
