The Giants have been extremely well-coached early this season with Brian Daboll serving as somewhat of a revelation for a franchise that is finally showing signs of life, but the Ravens present an entirely different test for a team whose win over the Packers in London last week is being a bit overvalued. While easier said than done, Baltimore will try and slow down or even stop Saquon Barkley, which would leave it up to Daniel Jones to try and match MVP favorite Lamar Jackson. Whereas Jackson is tremendous against the blitz (a Wink Martindale special), Jones is ranked near the bottom of the NFL in yards per pass attempt on the season. If the Ravens can force the Giants to throw while playing from behind, Baltimore could pile it up on the road.
The Ravens already won and covered the spread at MetLife Stadium earlier this season against the Jets. Now they visit the facility to face the Giants, who amazingly are 4-1. Baltimore will be a huge obstacle for them, however. The Ravens showed that they are playing better defensively after a solid performance against Cincinnati last week. They also have that extra gear when it’s time to make winning plays. Take the Ravens as the road favorites to knock off the Giants.
The Giants defense should have a bit of an advantage defensively thanks to defensive coordinator Wink Martindale's intimate knowledge of both the Ravens personnel and scheme. That'll keep the Giants highly competitive in this game. Unfortunately for the offense, if Saquon isn't having a Saquon-like day, there's no chance the offense can move the football consistently without him being a major factor in it. Look for the Ravens to start to pull away late thanks to the added possessions they'll get from their defensive efforts.
Everybody thinks the Giants aren't as good as their 4-1 record indicates, and they're probably right. But being 5.5-point 'dogs at home means we're not putting any legitimacy on their record in the market, which I think is a mistake. The excellent Giants coaching staff is putting the team in position to succeed, and Giants DC Wink Martindale should be as well-versed as anyone on how to slow down Lamar Jackson after his years in Baltimore. Daniel Jones appears to be growing more comfortable in Brian Daboll's offense, and Saquon Barkley is a candidate to hit some big plays against this Baltimore D. I'm giving the Giants more credit than the market, but try and find +6 to play.
