Late to the party here, but I'll still back the Seahawks getting more than a field goal. Detroit will be missing arguably its top three playmakers in D'Andre Swift, Amon-Ra St. Brown and D.J. Chark, with fellow wideout Josh Reynolds listed as questionable. The Seahawks should be able to run effectively against a Lions defense that gives up 5.0 yards per carry and just lost safety Tracy Walker to a torn Achilles.
The Lions have put up a lot of points, and maybe that would continue against a bad Seattle defense if just one key player was out. But with D'Andre Swift, Amon-Ra St. Brown and D.J. Chark sidelined -- and Josh Reynolds questionable -- this isn't the same Lions offense. Unfortunately for Detroit, it is the same defense, one that has allowed the most points in the league. The Seahawks aren't very good, but DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett will be the best WRs in this game by a mile. If Seattle focuses on T.J. Hockenson and dares someone else to beat them ... who else is there? Grab the points.
This matchup has drawn a high total because of one team, and that team has been weakened by injuries. Amon-Ra St. Brown, the Lions' best receiver by a mile, is a certain scratch and likely will be joined on the sideline by primary running back D’Andre Swift. Seattle should contribute marginally to this total. The Seahawks rank 28th in total offense and 29th in scoring offense (15.7 points per game). QB Geno Smith’s shiny passing completion rate (77.5%) is a tad misleading. He averages just seven yards per attempt.
Both these teams were unable to put their opponents away late last week, but what struck me was how good the Seahawks offense looked when given a bad defense to beat up. They'll get that again this week, one that will have to overcome the loss of veteran safety Tracy Walker. The Lions offense continues to shine, and now they'll face a Seattle unit that just gave up 7.1 yards per play to the Falcons and now ranks 32nd in pass yards per play allowed. Inside the dome, there's no reason this game stays in the 40s, and I expect this total to rise throughout the week.
