Cardinals QB Kyler Murray is questionable for the game, as is WR DeAndre Hopkins. Arizona has the No. 2 defense in my ratings. San Francisco's defense is 11th. The 49ers will have QB Jimmy Garoppolo back under center after he missed the 17-10 loss at Arizona in Week 5, but it likely won't help get the total Over.
The smart move probably is to wait until Sunday morning for this one, but it's my birthday weekend so doubt will be at a computer then and the spread might be much higher. This has flipped from Cards -3 to Niners -2 with Kyler Murray very questionable -- so is DeAndre Hopkins. If you watched TNF in Week 8, Hopkins couldn't even finish with his hammy and Murray was in major pain walking off following that crushing interception. Might they gut it out Sunday? Perhaps, but at way less than 100 percent. Plus, AJ Green is out in COVID as are a few assistant coaches. This sets up perfectly for the Niners, who got a little mojo back last week spanking my Bears. May as well take the moneyline at just 20 cents higher than Niners -2 to avoid any funny business.
With Arizona coming off its first loss of the season, this would typically shape up as a great bounce-back spot. But Kyler Murray seems to have a real chance of missing this game due to an ankle injury, while DeAndre Hopkins didn't practice to start the week with a hamstring issue, and A.J. Green was placed on the COVID list. Like last week, we want to be ahead of any potential Murray news before the line moves, though it didn't work out so well backing Minnesota. The 49ers should do a better job; they outgained Arizona in the first meeting between these teams with Trey Lance at QB. Look for the Niners as a teaser leg on this number too.
The 49ers bring in the better offensive and defensive lines at Football Outsiders. San Francisco's defensive line is ranked No. 5, while Arizona is 21st. Cardinals QB Kyler Murray (ankle) is questionable to start. I'm hearing Arizona wants to hold him out until he's 100 percent healthy. That won't be this week. In that case, Colt McCoy will start for the Cards. The 49ers lost 17-10 earlier this season, despite outgaining Arizona 338-304. 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan knows how to defend Murray in the event he starts. I think this is the perfect time to start fading Kliff Kingsbury and company. Shanahan is 8-4 SU and 8-4 ATS in revenge games over the past three years.
I'll bite and bounce back with Arizona. The Cardinals are 4-0 ATS on the road this season and already defeated San Francisco just four short weeks ago. The 49ers have scored 21 points or fewer in three of its last four games and if we get the Kyler Murray revenge offense Sunday then I'm not sure San Francisco can play (and score) fast enough to keep up. Give me Arizona under 3.
