Understanding Public and Money
DraftKings. This is a low line for Obi Toppin, who scored at least nine points in 33 of his 49 games played since the beginning of December. And against teams in the bottom 12 at defending transition points (Lakers are 23rd), he’s cleared this line in 20/28 game this season. Coming off the bench, we’ve seen Pacers coach Rick Carlisle employing more looks with Toppin and Pascal Siakam on the floor of late, which boosts the minutes ceiling of the former. And against a Lakers team that runs their own small-ball lineups, Toppin could see more run with Siakam at the center.
Luka has been cooking recently, topping 30 points in three straight and eight of 10 overall. He has a good matchup tonight against a Pacers team that plays at the fifth fastest pace in the NBA, which typically leads to more possessions. It was with Dallas but Luka has scored 33, 39 and 34 points in his last three games vs. Indiana. I also expect the Lakers to go all out in this game after dropping three straight. The spot and matchup sets up for Luka to have another big scoring night.
LeBron's return to the Lake Show's lineup has hardly been a celebration, with ugly losses to the Bulls and Magic stretching the current skid to three. Defense has been an issue, especially in the Chicago loss when the Bulls nearly hit 60% from the floor, but LA had no answer on Monday for the Magic, either, with Franz Wagner and Paolo Banchero combining for 62 points. This looks a "reputation spread" because the Pacers are playing much better than LA at the moment, winning five straight and seven of eight, and off of a 119-103 thrashing of the T-wolves, with recently activated Tyrese Haliburton scoring 24 and Obi Toppin making six triples. Play Pacers
I've been banking on the Lakers getting back into top defensive form for a few weeks now and it's time to start fading it. They have collapsed and their lack of a big man seems like a big deal now and while the Pacers aren't built to exploit that in particular, they can run and score. The Lakers are over 4 straight on the road and 8 of their last 10 overall. The Pacers have been an under team lately but are averaging 120/G in their last 15 at home. The Lakers' offense should find plenty of opportunities to score from distance and by driving to the paint against Indiana. It's getting to be a little desperate for the Lakers.
