D-backs starter Zac Gallen was nearly two runs worse on the road this season (2.47 ERA at home, 4.42 on road) and had some shaky moments in his first two playoff wins. The Brewers and Dodgers kind of let him off the hook and I don't expect that to happen with the Phillies at home. Zack Wheeler and the Phillies' power arms in the bullpen mostly held down the Braves in the NLDS, so I'm expecting the same to happen here. There will be room for comfort, so I'm grabbing the run line (-1.5, +130).
The Phils have the big momentum in the postseason, as do the D-backs, who are 5-0 in the playoffs. But Philly has made home-field edge work at the Bank these past two years in the NL playoffs and very happy to have on the mound Zack Wheeler, who has pitched great across his past three starts with a 2.12 ERA. This will be a chore tonight for Zac Gallen to contain the hot Phillies, who clubbed eight homers of the last two games of the NLDS against the Braves. Play Phillies on Run Line
Arizona is undefeated this postseason but winning in Philly is another matter. Zack Wheeler has looked dominant this postseason, striking out 18 and walking one in 13 innings. He owns a lifetime 2.59 ERA in the playoffs. The Diamondbacks' Zac Gallen has been more vulnerable on the road and has allowed a 49 percent hard-hit rate since the All-Star Break. Citizens Bank Park offers the best homefield advantage in the postseason.
The Phillies have played really well at home. They went 49-32 in Philadelphia during the regular season and have won all four games there during the playoffs. They will deploy their ace Zack Wheeler, who has a career 2.59 ERA and 0.72 WHIP in the playoffs. As hot as the Diamondbacks have been, look for the Phillies to defend their home field and take Game 1.
The Phillies have the best record of any team in MLB history in their home stadium in the playoffs (minimum 20 games played) and are starting ace Zack Wheeler. What's to think about? The warm-weather Diamondbacks will be playing outdoors in the cold (it's not going to snow or anything Monday but be in the mid-40s) for the first time maybe all season and that takes a bit of an adjustment period for the hitters.
Both Zac Gallen and Zack Wheeler are capable of seven shutout innings, and it will be a bit chilly in Philly so that only helps pitchers. The Diamondbacks haven't even allowed more than three runs in a game yet in these playoffs.
