Utah QB Cam Rising is set to start and the Utes have had two weeks of prep time for this matchup. I believed Utah was good enough to make a run at the CFP this year, and most of that was dependent on Rising being on the field. I expect an inspired effort from Utah on Friday night. Utes by 7+.
The stubborn Devils pulled out another close game last week despite being arguably outplayed by Kansas much of the way. Utah has had a week to recover from its upset loss to Arizona and should be poised for a solid performance. Utah's unsteady QB play remains a concern but its physicality should win out against a finesse ASU club.
Will Cam Rising play, or is this another feint from Kyle Whittingham? Frankly, I don't care. Utah is certainly better with Rising, but he's hardly played the last two seasons, so it's difficult to believe he'll be sharp. Arizona State will try to control the game with its rushing offense.
Where are you, Cam Rising? Kyle Whittingham is getting used to Rising's iffy status after knee woes and more-recently a wrist injury suffered Sept. 7 vs. Baylor. In his place, frosh Isaac Wilson isn't exactly lighting up the field, with 6 TD passes but 7 interceptions already on the season. This also isn't the same ASU that got swamped 55-3 last year in Salt Lake City; the Sun Devils are unbeaten at home and are scoring better than 37 ppg at Tempe, including a rousing 35-31 win over Kansas last week. Michigan State transfer QB Sam Leavitt is proving a nice upgrade for second-year HC Kenny Dillingham, while punishing RB Cam Skattebo scattered the Jayhawks defense for 182 YR last weekend.
