I was high on SMU coming into the season, and even called them a dark horse CFP candidate at one point. They made me look like a fool in their sloppy Week 0 win over Nevada, but they did bounce back nicely against Houston Baptist last week. BYU looked better than I expected last week, but I still have high hopes for SMU and the Mustangs' offense. I have this number at -13.5 in SMU's favor, so there is plenty of value in hopping on this number.
The high-powered Mustangs survived their three-quarter sleepwalk at Nevada in Week 0 and prepared for their rugged schedule with a glorified scrimmage against Houston Christian last week. The Cougars were brutalized by injuries and inconsistent offense last season. While they should be improved, there is still uncertainty at several defensive positions and that is ominous against a relentless SMU offense that will exploit all weaknesses.
It took four games last year for Jake Retzlaff to prove his worth and they were all losses but they did cover the last two games and showed promise enough to lead the way this year. It started in spring practice where he didn't throw an interception in any of the sessions. Then it came in his first game this year where he was electric throwing for 348 yards, three touchdowns, and no interception. We don't have enough of a sample size yet but it's worth taking double-digits against SMU who struggled in their opener at Nevada. BYU to cover.
