San Jose State may have been the best team in the Mountain West Conference by the end of the season. Coastal lost super productive quarterback Grayson McCall to the Portal, and I just don't see any reason the Chanticleers will be overly motivated here. This game is a homecoming for SJSU quarterback Chevan Cordeiro, and I expect him to lead the Spartans to a double digit win.
This line has conveniently dipped two points, a blessing for those of us hesitant to lay double digits in bowls. Reports indicate Coastal's transfer portal is packed with as many as 23 players. While many contributed minimally, absent star QB Grayson McCall and his backup, Jarrett Guest, leave the Chanticleers hurting behind center. San Jose has no QB worries. Chevan Cordeiro concludes his career at Hawaii where he spent his first four seasons. The Spartans should embrace the scenario; they beat the Rainbow Warriors on all three trips to Honolulu the past four years. San Jose closed its schedule with five covers in the last six games.
While it's hard to argue with how San Jose State closed the season, I have a strong feeling that this game will end up within one score. Neither of these schools have amazing recent bowl trends to speak of, but San Jose State has been outscored 75-40 in their last two bowls under coach Brent Brennan. It's a ridiculously long trip for Coastal Carolina out to Hawaii but this team was no slouch ATS, going 8-4 this season. If you can get this pick at 10.5, that hook very well could come in handy. Nonetheless, in what should be a fun, high-scoring game, I'll say San Jose State 34, Coastal Carolina 28.
Familiar surroundings for San Jose, which rolled past 35-0 in Honolulu on October 28. All part of a General Sherman-like march by the Spartans down the stretch when they won their last six games, all by double-digit margins, and held out of the MW title game only by computer tiebreakers. Brent "Tecumseh" Brennan also hellbent for his team to perform better than its last two bowls, losses to Ball State (202) and EMU (2022), and will lean on QB Chevan Cordeiro and a revived infantry that was gaining over 200 yards per game down the stretch. Meanwhile the Chants have already been dealt a blow as QB Grayson McCall has entered the transfer portal and won't make the trip. Play SJSU (Hawaii Bowl)
