Iowa has one of the worst offenses in the nation. From a success rate standpoint, the Hawkeyes rank 64th of 65 Power Five teams on offense, ahead of only Kansas. Their defense is great, but if the Hawkeyes are going to cover as road favorites on a short week, they'll need to score points. I can't trust this offense to do it.
I didn't want to sit out tonight's college football action ... don't really love the spread here and was leaning Under the total. With the likes of Barrett Sallee and Jerry Palm also leaning Under, let's do it. Iowa per usual is a stellar defensive team -- it has forced nine turnovers and scored 51 points off them including three scores on D -- and a pretty mediocre offensive club. The Terps are 4-0 behind Taulia Tagovailoa and averaging nearly 38 points per game, but they haven't seen a defense like this one. Iowa has allowed four quarterbacks to average 5.8 yards per passing attempt this season; Tagovailoa is averaging 9.1. Meanwhile, the Maryland defense is allowing just 14.3 ppg. I could see this staying Under 40 combined points.
This is a battle of undefeated teams, at least one of which was not expected to be at this point. The Terrapins have gotten off to a great start this season, especially offensively behind the play of quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa. However, few things are more reliable in college football than the Iowa defense, which has not given up more than 24 points for 26 consecutive games. If the Hawkeyes dictate style, this will be another Under.
Both defenses are pretty darn solid. Iowa has ridden its defense all the way into the top-5 despite having a remarkably mediocre offense. Maryland is giving up 324.3 yards per game, and shouldn't have any issue making this game as ugly as humanly possible. This feels way more like a 17-13 style game than a shootout.
The Hawkeyes arguably have the best defense in the nation. They've allowed 11 points per game. The Terps also are playing great defense, yielding 14.3 points per game. Expect the Hawkeyes to slow this game down as they like playing these low-scoring grinders. Go Under.
Both teams have won all four of their games and each are 3-1 ATS. But Maryland is extremely fortunate to have won at Illinois and also fortunate that West Virginia turned the ball over. Maryland QB Taulia Tagovailoa has been efficient in leading the offense But I like Iowa’s defense to slow the Maryland offense down and I expect the Hawkeyes to win the turnover margin battle. Take Iowa on the money line. .
