Iowa travels to face Minnesota in a Big Ten battle on Friday. The Hawkeyes are coming off a complete game in which they blew out Michigan State, 49-7. In fact, the Hawkeyes could easily be undefeated at 3-0, if not for poor second halves against Purdue and Northwestern. That’s devalued the Golden Gophers, who have had poor numbers from oddsmakers in their first three games, in this matchup. Grab Minnesota and the points.
You might be under the impression Iowa solved its offensive problems last week when you see it beat Michigan State 49-7. It didn't. The Hawkeyes were helped by a couple of touchdowns on special teams and defense, and the offense continues to lack any explosivity. The Hawkeyes are scoring only 1.83 points per possession, which ranks 94th nationally. Minnesota's defense will help them find some success, but I have a hard time trusting bad offenses to cover as road favorites.
Minnesota got back on the winning track after blowing out Illinois. What has been the most consistent thing for the Gophers this year has been their offense's ability to score. Unfortunately, their defense has been a liability. Last weekend's game against Illinois gave you evidence that they are capable. Without Iowa's offense being as threatening as others they've faced, it should make for a repeat performance.
