Maybe the combination of Sam Ehlinger in his third NFL start and Jeff Saturday in his first game as a coach above high-school level will result in a Colts win or close loss … but I’ll pay to see it. Jonathan Taylor is back and teams often get a spark the week after a coach is fired — perhaps the reason for this line dipping from 6 to 4.5 — but I don’t think that plays in this instance. Frank Reich was a respected coach. The struggling Raiders actually have a top-10 run defense, and Ehlinger has yet to throw an NFL TD pass. The Colts weren’t able to block before Saturday was hired, and I don’t think he’s playing. Lay the points.
Las Vegas, in contention for the most disappointing team this season, just caught a break. After a disastrous two-game trip east in which they were shut out and blew a 17-point lead, the Raiders luck into an opponent in disarray. The Colts fired coach Frank Reich and inserted ex-Indy center Jeff Saturday, who has coached only on the high school level, as interim. The new play-caller is an assistant, 30, who has never performed those duties. Five of the Raiders’ six defeats were by one-score margins. They take out frustrations on Indy.
The Colts ended the Frank Reich era this week to turn to a head coach who has never done it as a professional. Jeff Saturday will try to fix an offense that was 0-for-14 on third down last week while averaging two yards per play. Good luck! Only one Colts game has topped 41 points all year as their defense has played well, particularly against the run. That's where the Raiders offense shines, and with Josh McDaniels blowing yet another 17-point lead last week, the focus here has to be on keeping the Colts offense from rallying, which shouldn't be difficult. The Raiders should cover despite the big spread, but the Under feels like it has a great chance of coming in.
