The season has yet to start for Seattle's offense; across the past three nights vs. the Athletics, they've only scored six runs, and against A's starting pitchers, they've only scored once (across 17 innings). This follows last season when the Mariners offense often went into funks and suggests that maybe the offseason didn't cure those ills. None of the first three games in this series has cleared seven runs, and hardly sure the A's do much business today against Bryan Woo, who posted a 2.49 ERA in ten starts at T-Mobile Park last season, and only allowed 2 ER in 20 1/3 IP (0.89 ERA) vs. the A's last season. Now, can JP Sears keep the Seattle bats off-balance on Sunday? Play A's-Mariners Under
Two very good young pitchers in JP Sears and Bryan Woo (0.89 ERA vs. A's last year in three starts), and both the A's and Mariners have good bullpens and not great lineups in a pitchers' park. First three games in the series: 6, 7 and 6 runs scored. The 7.5s are starting to disappear ....
We loved the A's Fri night with a crafty lefty on the mound in that big ballpark vs a listless M's lineup. We love it again here. This time it's JP Sears, an emerging lefty, in the place of Jeffrey Springs, who confounded Seattle with 9 Ks in 6 sterling IP. Sears has been great in 5 of 7 career outings vs Seattle and has allowed just 28 H in 45 2/3 IP with a 2.76 ERA. M's had a pathetic .624 OPS vs lefties at home last season (29th) and have picked up where they left off. The A's lineup is more diverse in its approach and grinds more than Seattle's. I like the A's pen more, too. The Athletics are gonna surprise people.
