It’s desperation time for the Phillies in an elimination game. Backs against the wall, I like the situation for them. The no-hitter in Game 4 had a lingering effect into Game 5. Framber Valdez is going to be a problem, because the Astros have won 12 of his last 14 starts, including his last four. Only three runs allowed in his last four. Take some pitches, Phillies. And let Zack Wheeler have his moment. In his last eight starts, he’s allowed no runs in four of those. He’s got to be on it, and he will be. Phillies to win.
No reason to wait until Saturday, although it's possible Yuli Gurriel can't play for Houston. I'd love to see a Game 7 but by all accounts Zack Wheeler's velocity is way down and the Phillies fear he's wearing down -- hopeful extra rest will fix things temporarily. Obviously it will be all hands on deck if Wheeler is struggling. Wheeler spent a month on the IL with right forearm tendinitis before returning on Sept. 21 so maybe that's back. We have no concerns on Houston's Framber Valdez, who has a 1.42 ERA in these playoffs and held the Phils to one run over 6.1 in Game 2. I may call Mattress Mack for a loan if/when the Stros finish things off.
