One of these teams has a one-dimensional offense that has rotated through three different quarterbacks this season, and is yet to find an answer. The other has one of the best QBs in the conference, potentially two NFL wide receivers, and is scoring 31 points per game. Guess which one is favored? Sure, Michigan could win this game, but should it be favored? No.
Michigan continues to waffle on its quarterback situation while Illinois knows exactly who it is and what it needs to do in order to win. I'm not going to panic too much about last week's close call against Purdue, but instead look at how Michigan's secondary has shown a drop-off beyond stud CB Will Johnson. Luke Altmyer has multiple options in the Illinois passing game with both Zach Franklin and Pat Bryant Jr. having stellar seasons, and I think that variety of options will be enough to keep Michigan's defense honest or burn them when the Wolverines over-commit to QB pressure.
I can't believe that I'm advocating for the over in a Michigan-Illinois game but here we are. Michigan ranks 111th in the nation against the pass and Illinois' Luke Altmyer has been great this season with 14 touchdown passes to only one interception. The Fighting Illini were up 24-3 at halftime last week against Purdue and the game ended up 50-49 in overtime somehow. That's not a good sign for their defense this week. Michigan saves their season for now with a clutch win. Michigan 27, Illinois 24.
