Florida fans have clamored for QB Anthony Richardson to start, but I don't think Dan Mullen is an idiot. I think that if Richardson were ready to start, Mullen would have him doing so. This means the Gators will use both Richardson and Emory Jones, and neither is capable of doing enough in the air to keep up with Alabama for 60 minutes. So even if Alabama gets off to a slow start in a tough environment, the Tide should roll in the second half.
Turnovers get teams killed vs. Alabama, and Gators quarterback Emory Jones has thrown two picks in each of his first two games as the starter. Meanwhile, coach Dan Mullen seems reluctant to give Anthony Richardson too much run -- especially since he pulled a hamstring at the end of last week’s win over USF. The Crimson Tide will force the Gators into a shootout and there’s no way that they’ll be able to keep up. Honestly, 14.5 should be the halftime line, not the full game line.
I have not found a model that has the Tide winning by more than 15 yet -- SportsLine's has them winning by 11. The Swamp is one of the toughest places to play in the country when it's rocking, and it certainly will be for Bama's first visit since 2011. Florida did hang with Alabama in last year's SEC title game, although both teams lost a lot of talent off those clubs. This is Bama's first true road game of the year and it is 1-4 ATS in its past five road games vs. a team with a winning home record. Florida is 5-2 ATS in its past seven as a dog. The Gators lead the nation in rushing so perhaps they can keep that high-powered Alabama offense off the field.
I don't believe it matters to Alabama whether it's Emory Jones or Anthony Richardson at QB for the Gators. The fact of the matter is that they will have to consistently make plays in the passing game against the Crimson Tide's defense if they want to have a chance, as you can expect Alabama coach Nick Saban to neutralize their ability to scramble, escape and extend. Offensively speaking for the Crimson Tide, QB Bryce Young has the look of a young Russell Wilson in the pocket.
You're catching Alabama in a great spot this week. While Florida fans clamor for who should start at QB, Nick Saban has wasted zero time ripping into his team with talks of rat poison and hard work. Expect ruthless precision from the Tide Saturday on both sides of the ball. Plus, Saban knows Dan Mullen will push the gas pedal offensively for 60 minutes, so don't count on any brakes from Alabama either.
