WCC Tournament title from Las Vegas. Could the Zags really lose Drew Timme's last WCC game? I swear that dude is like 67 years old, and he will become the school's all-time leading scorer tonight. Knowing the Hornets, they will take Timme high in the 2023 draft like they did with Crying Adam Morrison all those years ago. These teams split in the regular season, but the Zags have simply been there, done that when it comes to postseason success a lot more than SMC has. Gonzaga's only WCC losses this year were in OT at Saint Mary's and by a point to Loyola Marymount. It's not like Mark Few's team has fallen very far this year -- although I won't be picking it to win the NCAA Tournament or even reach the Final Four.
Gonzaga has won eight straight since losing at St. Mary’s on Feb. 4. When they met again, the Zags won 77-68. I made this line -4 before factoring in Gonzaga's de facto home-court edge in Las Vegas, where they annually see a swarm of adoring fans. Gonzaga should be -6 so I'll gladly take Gonzaga to cover.
The Bulldogs are shooting 55% over their last five, while their defensive pressure hasn’t been nearly as good as past Zags squads. But the offense is the focus. I bet the Over because the Zags have gone Over in eight of their last nine games. There's a small home edge for Gonzaga at Las Vegas. Back the Over.
There is little doubt that Gonzaga will take the rubber match of this series seriously. The Bulldogs maintain a healthy hate for the Gaels, who dealt them a rare defeat this season. Zaga has reached the previous 25 WCC Tournament finals and won 20. A No. 2 seed in the Big Dance might be attainable with a win. A drop in the original line of -3.5 could make a difference in a tight finish in a rivalry that's a miniature version of Duke-UNC.
