Will Australia's NBA lineup stay within 30 of Team USA?
A double dose of hoops highlights our Day Five recommendations as the rip-roaring U.S. men's and women's teams are hefty favorites by similar spreads. Their only competition seems to be against each other: Which can win by the greater margin?
There is not an American to be found on the medal contenders list for premier men's all-around gymnast. The odds hint at a balanced field, even if one candidate stands out.
The three swim finals spotlight a sizable favorite. We cannot ignore the pool party scene, so will offer a single pick on the most contested race.
Our odds come courtesy of Paddypower.com and Sportsbook.ag. Start times are tentative.
MEN'S GYMNASTICS
Individual all-around, 3 p.m. ET
Kohei Uchimura has rounded up the last half-dozen world all-around titles. He is the defending Olympics champion. He paced Japan to the team all-around gold on Monday, which relieves the pressure on him to repeat in the solo category.
From all angles, oddsmakers should be offering odds lower than the 5/6 posted for Uchimura.
He is no lock, having flubbed a routine Monday on the high bar. But he is inarguably superior to challengers such as Oleg Verniaiev of Ukraine (5/4), Manrique Larduet of Cuba (7/2) and Shudi Deng of China (6/1). (Playing Pokemon Go is another matter. Uchimura says he inadvertently rang up a $5,000 phone bill at it in Rio last week.)
The multiple disciplines in the all-around allow for a mistake here and there. Uchimura can afford one, maybe two, and still do what he always does -- win.
Pick: Kohei Uchimura, Japan (5/6)
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
U.S. vs. Serbia, 2:30 p.m. ET
The Serbs sailed into the tournament still on a high from their 2015 EuroBasket title for continental supremacy. Their balloon quickly was popped in Rio.
They bowed 65-59 to Spain, then 71-67 to Canada after frittering away a massive lead.
The Euro crown is a bit misleading. Serbia went just 4-3 before the knockout rounds and is ranked a modest 14th globally.
The U.S. hammered No. 3 Spain 103-63, along with China 119-62. The Americans, favored by 34 points, are inclined to show no mercy and will step on the Serbs while they are down.
Pick: Team USA -34
MEN'S BASKETBALL
U.S. vs. Australia, 6 p.m. ET
This should be fun. Competitive, too, relatively speaking.
After the U.S. spotted its first two opponents 50-plus points, going 1-1 ATS, it is granting just 30.5 to the upstart Aussies, ranked 11th entering the tournament.
NBA followers will find this roster most familiar. The backcourt features Patty Mills and Matthew Dellavedova, who collaborated for 49 points Monday against Serbia. (Dellavedova dished out 13 assists against zero turnovers, numbers that might have induced the Cavaliers to re-sign him had they only known.)
Holding down the fort is center Andrew Bogut, who was iffy to participate because of a balky knee. Aron Baynes and Joe Ingles complete the all-NBA lineup.
Going Under the sky-high total of 187 held some appeal. But a check of the U.S.-Australia scores from the previous two Olympics -- 119-86 and 116-85 -- put a damper on that notion.
So, instead of the Under, let's go with the team from Down Under.
Pick: Australia +30.5
SWIMMING
Men's 100-meter freestyle, 10:03 p.m. ET
Cameron McEvoy is a well-deserved favorite. The Aussie, who got a taste of the Olympics as a 17-year-old relay member in 2012, is No. 1 worldwide.
But a 3/10 favorite? No way, not with the U.S.' Nathan Adrian aiming for a repeat of his gold in London. He needs to get under the Trials time of 47.72 seconds and approach McEvoy's best of 47.04, but that is doable for someone who knows what it takes.
After all, Adrian clocked 47.52 four years ago. He will be relaxed, having already pocketed a gold in Rio as anchor of the 400-meter free relay.
His odds are an absurdly high 7/1, just ahead of McEvoy's teammate, Kyle Chalmers, at 8/1. Look for Adrian to tower over the Aussies on the medals podium.
Pick: Nathan Adrian, U.S. (+700)
