Spring football has largely been predictable since it emerged in 2019, with the good teams so much better than the others that they'd manage to win by margin relatively easily, and it didn't pay to predict too many upsets. That's reflected no better than the Birmingham Stallions entering this season with a 32-4 straight-up record over three seasons, including playoffs.

But this year has been a little bit different, with key upsets happening seemingly every week, with none possibly more surprising than the winless San Antonio Brahmas taking down the undefeated DC Defenders in Week 4. However, in several of these upsets, the loser has been the more dominant team statistically and lost on a few big plays or bad bounces, as the Defenders did when they outgained the Brahmas by 2.5 yards per play despite the final score. The challenge is determining how much the underlying statistics can be trusted before backing a big favorite in this UFL season in particular.
