Fantasy Football Week 13 Waiver Wire: How much to bid on Devaughn Vele, Jeremy McNichols and more key targets
The quarterback position has been a tough nut to crack for many Fantasy managers this year. Lamar Jackson, Jalen Hurts, and Josh Allen have lived up to their lofty draft status, but Patrick Mahomes has been more of a fringe starter most weeks, while the two young quarterbacks in the next tier, C.J. Stroud and Anthony Richardson, have been varying levels of disappointing all year. The next tier down featured one big hit in Joe Burrow and then a mixture of injury issues and disappointing play.
As for the rookies, the Caleb Williams dream died for the most part pretty early in the season, while Jayden Daniels was a potential league-winner before a recent rough stretch (potentially playing through injury?) that saw a rebound this past week thanks in part to his best rushing performance since Week 8. Bo Nix has looked more and more trustworthy as the season has rolled on, while Drake Maye has been more hit-or-miss. Any of the rookies could be great starts in the right matchup, but it's going to be hard for most managers to trust one of them winning their way to a Fantasy title during the playoffs.
So where does that leave us? It seems like with multiple teams in Fantasy leagues are potentially going the streaming route at the QB position and treating it like DST for the most part. And even if you have a guy that seems like he's emerging into a dependable option -- say someone in the Tua Tagovailoa, Sam Darnold, or Jordan Love class averaging around 20 points per game -- the best strategy is likely going to be using a bench spot on a backup QB to cover the weeks they have bad matchups during the Fantasy playoffs rather than just sticking with them in every matchup.
Unless you really need help covering the six teams on bye in Week 14, I'd plan ahead and scoop up a backup QB on most rosters in place of your worst player at another position, especially since some of those deeper Fantasy options have some nice-looking schedules down the stretch. And if you just can't make it work, remember to put one of those QBs in your queue following Week 14 when you say goodbye to those bye-week fill-ins.
