Fantasy Football 2024 RB committees: Breaking down AFC depth charts, finding draft day workhorses and sleepers
In 2006, Kansas City Chiefs running back Larry Johnson led the league with 416 rushing attempts, an absurd number when viewed through the lens of the modern NFL. The extinction of the workhorse Fantasy running back has been an ongoing storyline for years, but we always had at least one back carry the ball 300 times, whether it was Derrick Henry, Ezekiel Elliott, Adrian Peterson, or others. That changed in 2023, a season in which no player had 300 rushing attempts for the first time since 1990, and Henry's 280 carries marked the fewest for a league-leader in a non-strike season in nearly 50 years. That's despite the NFL playing three more games in 2023 than that 1974 season when O.J. Simpson led the league with 270 carries.
With even the highest-volume RB1s not receiving 20 carries a game, it's clear that every team employs a running back committee in some form or fashion, but identifying which offensive systems can still allow the modern version of a workhorse running back to flourish is key to having success in Fantasy football in 2024. Before you finalize your rankings, you need to see what Fantasy and NFL expert R.J. White has to say about every running back committee in the AFC.
If you're a regular subscriber to SportsLine, you probably know White from dominating NFL picks for years, but did you know he actually got his start in sports media as a fantasy baseball and football analyst? He even finished No. 1 among all experts for his draft rankings the first year FantasyPros tracked MLB expert accuracy on their site. White has continued to excel at season-long and dynasty Fantasy baseball and football formats, and this year he's sharing his Fantasy expertise with SportsLine subscribers.
Last year, White's RB committees columns in the Fantasy Football Draft Bible identified Rachaad White as having workhorse potential by giving a high 8 out of 10 rating on his grading scale, and the Buccaneers back finished the year tied for second in rushing attempts with Christian McCaffrey. He also delved into each team to unearth sleepers like Keaton Mitchell, Devin Singletary, and Tyler Allgeier who outperformed their preseason draft prices.
Now, White has analyzed all 16 AFC backfields to determine which committees provide the most Fantasy value heading into the 2024 season. One AFC sleeper we can share: Dolphins rookie Jaylen Wright, who "has sleeper potential if the 32-year-old Raheem Mostert hits a wall this season as some had him graded as the best running back in the draft despite him falling to Day 3. There's a clear path for him to be the long-term 1B to Achane's 1A (or even vice versa), and he's worth a late pick to see if that happens as soon as 2024," according to White.
White is also targeting one completely off-the-radar back who could be a piece of a surprise committee in 2024! You ABSOLUTELY need to see who it is before you draft!
