Colin Kaepernick to Chargers? L.A. is first team with public interest in possibly working him out
According to multiple media reports, Los Angeles Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn says that free-agent Colin Kaepernick is on a workout list for the team and that the former dual-threat San Francisco 49ers quarterback fits what the club wants to do offensively. A workout list doesn't mean that he will actually get a shot at a tryout, though, and Lynn hasn't yet spoken to Kaepernick. It could be that Kap is invited on more of an emergency basis if something happens to one of the Chargers' current QBs, etc. L.A. almost surely won't be the lone team to potentially give Kaepernick a look. Â
Lynn added to various media that the Chargers haven't made official plans to work out Kaepernick but that: "It would be crazy to not have him on your workout list. … I haven't spoken with Colin, not sure where he's at as far in his career, what he wants to do, but Colin definitely fits the style of quarterback for the system that we're going to be running. I'm very confident and happy with the three quarterbacks that I have but you can never have too many people waiting on the runway."
The three quarterbacks on the roster are veteran journeyman Tyrod Taylor (who isn't all that unlike Kaepernick in style), rookie Justin Herbert (clearly the future under center for the team as the No. 6 overall pick in the 2020 draft) and 2019 fifth-round pick Easton Stick. The Chargers had once been linked to free-agent QB Cam Newton.
Legendary former Dallas Cowboys executive Gil Brandt, a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame and current SiriusXM NFL radio host, tweeted why Kap would work well for the Bolts: "Need at QB with potential to start. … Someone who will sell tickets. … Strong leader in Lynn."
Lynn has passionately praised Kaepernick's work this offseason. Kaepernick's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, says he expects his client to be signed and on a team this year. Commissioner Roger Goodell on Monday said he would "encourage" a club to sign Kapernick. Troy Vincent, the NFL's executive vice president of football operations, has said the league wants Kaepernick back.
Kaepernick, 32, has not played since the 2016 season with the Niners.Â
