Arguably the two best hitters in all of Major League Baseball -- Shohei Ohtani and Aaron Judge -- won the National League and American League MVP Awards last season. That doesn't happen as often as one might imagine. It would be easy to pencil in the best players in either league and expect them to go out and win the awards, but that's not always how it goes.  

Just look at 2022, when Paul Goldschmidt made a late-career surge in St. Louis and won the honors, or in 2018 and 2019 when Christian Yelich and Cody Bellinger suddenly took the league by storm. There's some variance here, even if Ohtani's presence in the league -- and his impending return to the mound, as he won last year purely as a DH -- makes the NL MVP much harder to win.
