2017 Super Bowl Betting Recap: Not what Vegas was hoping for

Former Vegas bookmaker Micah Roberts tells you how bettors fared against the house in Super Bowl LI.

The most thrilling Super Bowl Las Vegas bettors have ever witnessed produced mixed results around town, though most sports books still came out small winners in the Patriots' incredible 34-28 overtime win.

"It wasn't our best scenario," said Boyd Gaming sports book director Bob Scucci. "We needed Atlanta and the Under."

The Patriots covered the 3-point spread and the game went Over the total of 56.5. However, Scucci's books did well enough on props and futures to make up for the game result.

The Westgate Superbook also was hoping for Atlanta and Under, but the South Point book needed the Patriots and Over. CG Technology books did well with the Over but not the Pats covering.

William Hill called the Patriots-Over combo "a fitting end to a terrible pro football season."

For most of the two weeks of betting, every book needed Atlanta and Under, but the public betting patterns flipped on Sunday. Heavy money came in on the Falcons.

Sharp money also hit the town hard, betting the record total from 58 all the way down to 56.5.

Despite some books not getting their desired side and total, they managed to do well in other wagering areas to produce a winning day.

"We still held over 9 percent with all the props and futures posted," Scucci said. "A third of our win came from the futures and we did well with the props because a lot of sharp action took Under on many of the yardage props."

Scucci said his biggest loss on the props came with the "Yes" on overtime happening for the first time ever; that paid 7-to-1.

"Looking at the overtime prop in the long term, we're still way ahead on that one," he said.
