It's easy to root for Old Dominion and Ricky Rahne as the program continues to build itself into a formidable Group of Five foe. The Monarchs have been tested already this season in an upset win over Virginia and crushing loss to East Carolina, which itself pushed NC State to the limit in Week 1. Old Dominion is on a 5-0 ATS streak against ACC opponents, and it's 6-2 ATS overall dating back to last season. Even if Virginia does win Saturday, I don't see it maintaining a large lead through the final whistle. This should be a low-scoring, grind-it-out game, making the under of interest as well (just not enough for me).
Virginia is much worse this season than people realize. The offensive line is awful, and Brennan Armstrong has been pressured on more of his dropbacks than any other QB in the country. Last year's offensive coordinator Robert Anae has moved on to Syracuse, which is now lighting it up offensively. Meanwhile, the Cavs were the beneficiaries of four Illinois turnovers last week and still lost 24-3. I don't think they lose this game, but it's going to be a lot closer than expected. Especially since Virginia isn't allowing Old Dominion's rescue dog mascot Hudson to be on the sideline. Bet the Monarchs for Hudson!
Virginia is coming off its first game against FBS opposition. In that game, the Cavaliers' defense forced four turnovers, but the offense only managed three points. Those came after an 8-yard drive following one of those turnovers. The 24-3 loss at Illinois hardly inspires confidence in Virginia as they host the Monarchs, which already beat Virginia Tech this season. Expect ODU to make a game of this. They might even win.
