We know what our eyes tell us, and what regional sources are suggesting as well; Grand Canyon can play and Bama is going to have its hands full on Sunday in Spokane. Though the Tide's 91 ppg leads the nation, the Bama defense sometimes renders all of that scoring for naught, and the Lopes possess a unique blend of length and athleticism that could give the Tide many problems. Watch GCU's 6-7 sr. G Tyon Grant-Foster (19.8 ppg), who is on NBA radar, even more so after tallying 72 points across the last three GCU games (including Friday's win vs Saint Mary's). Play Grand Canyon (NCAA at Spokane)
Alabama found no resistance from Charleston's 175th-ranked defense as the Tide put up 109 points. Grand Canyon ranks 42nd in defensive efficiency and just held St. Mary's to 38.8 percent shooting, including 7 of 25 from beyond the arc. The Lopes are 30-4 and won't be intimidated in this matchup, especially with wins over San Diego State and St. Mary's under their belt. Grand Canyon also will have a crowd edge, as was evident Friday. Look for a tight, high-scoring game and grab the points.
Alabama plays at the 7th fastest tempo in the country and 3rd in adjusted offense per KenPom. Grand Canyon is 116th in tempo and 56th in adjusted offense. Bama will try to make this a track meet, And Alabama's defense is so deficient (117th in country per KenPom and of all remaining teams only Oakland is worse) that everyone can score on them, especially a team with the options GC has. Of ALA last 10 games, 8 went 175+. Games against non-SEC tourney teams: Purdue (178), Oregon (190), Morehead (178) went over this and Creighton (167) and Clemson (162) were close. I think that has significant shootout potential with both teams scoring in the 80s.
