While the Isles are still finding their footing under Patrick Roy, they have been solid on the defensive end. Goalie Ilya Sorokin has gone 3-1-1, sporting a 1.98 GAA and .936 SV% in five starts since the Islanders hired Roy. On the other side, the Rangers have a 2.76 GAA this season. I see this game finishing with 4 or 5 total goals.
The Islanders have yet to find their groove since hiring Patrick Roy, while the Rangers have won six straight and look like one of the top contenders to represent the Eastern Conference in this year's Stanley Cup final. The rivalry aspect and the fact that this game is being played at MetLife Stadium will play a role in the final outcome, but I still expect the Rangers to come out on top.
We saw nine goals at MetLife in the Devils vs Flyers game on Saturday, but such high-scoring is usually not the case in outdoor games, where weather and ice conditions are more fractious and can lend to uneven ice surfaces (and more difficulty passing the puck. Scorelines more like Seattle's 3-0 win over Vegas in the Winter Classic are more common in the outdoor games. With the Islanders having trouble scoring goals even indoors as they continue to flounder, that's good news for Rangers keeper Igor Shesterkin, off of a shutout against the Flames in his last start in goal. A 3-1 or 4-1 scoreline favoring the Rangers would not surprise us at all on Sunday. Play Rangers-Islanders "Under" (at MetLife Stadium)
Time for another Stadium Series game this afternoon as MetLife Stadium gets its second game in as many days. The Devils proved on Saturday that teams can score goals outside here on the Meadowlands rink, and if it's really business as usual, all the better for the Rangers, who enter with six straight wins and the offense cranked up for seven goals on Friday vs. Montreal. Meanwhile the Islanders have yet to ignite since the coaching change, and same old same old lately, with the offense sputtering in back=-to-back losses entering Sunday. Play Rangers on Puck Line (at MetLife Stadium)
