NFL: Has Jaguars star Jalen Ramsey played his last game with team?
A Thursday night NFL matchup between Tennessee and Jacksonville with limited appeal came accompanied by an odd sideshow: a participating player who has demanded to be traded. Cornerback Jalen Ramsey contributed to the Jaguars' 20-7 win even though he hopes to be wearing another jersey by Week 4 on the schedule.
There is no shortage of interest in Ramsey, who has been a Pro Bowl selection for two of his three seasons. The NFL Network reported that at least five teams (Cleveland, Kansas City, Oakland, Seattle and Philadelphia) are pursuing a trade. ESPN cited all of those franchises except Cleveland while including Minnesota and Baltimore among the avid shoppers.
The Jags should have gotten a hint that Ramsey might stir the pot this year when he pulled into training camp on the first day in a Brinks truck. Like many young standouts, he wanted his modest rookie contract to be upgraded before its expiration.
Judging from his comments in a podcast this week, Ramsey's beef goes deeper than compensation, though he did not elaborate. "It's kind of been building over time," he said of the trade request. The issue "is more so with the front office and the organization."
In the podcast, he dismissed a sideline blow-up with Jags head coach Doug Marrone as an insignificant heat-of-the-moment incident. Ramsey was ticked that Marrone did not challenge an official's call.
Jags owner Shad Khan reportedly hopes that the club can figure out how to make peace with Ramsey. However, the franchise is run by ex-coach Tom Coughlin, a traditional hard-liner, so prospects seem slim.
What might keep him in Jacksonville is the price that Ramsey's suitors would have to pay. The Jags are believed to insist on a future first-round draft pick, plus at least another pick or current player.
After Thursday's game, Ramsey clammed up when asked by media about his situation. His actions might have spoken volumes. He hugged a few teammates as a possible farewell and hauled several items away from his locker.Â
The Jaguars currently have odds of 200/1 to win the Super Bowl.Â
