Giants vs. Chargers NFL Week 14 spread, odds: Jake Fromm could make first start at quarterback with Daniel Jones, Mike Glennon injured

The New York Giants' lost season got even uglier Sunday in a 20-9 loss in Miami as the team was without starting quarterback Daniel Jones due to a strained neck and backup Mike Glennon was terrible … and is now in the concussion protocol. Thus, it's likely that former Georgia star Jake Fromm will make his first NFL start under center this Sunday at the Los Angeles Chargers, who opened as 10.5-point favorites at Caesars Sportsbook.

Only a week ago, Fromm was a member of the Buffalo Bills – not on their active roster but fourth on the team's QB depth chart and on the practice squad. Big Blue signed him off that practice squad last week. In the 2021 preseason for Buffalo, Fromm completed 21 of 36 passes (58.3%) for 172 yards. He was released Aug. 31 and signed to the Bills' practice squad the following day.

Fromm was a fifth-round pick in the 2020 draft out of Georgia. He served as Glennon's backup Sunday, the first time Fromm was in uniform for an NFL game. Former Michigan State quarterback Brian Lewerke is on the Giants' practice squad.

New York is heading west to practice at the University of Arizona starting Wednesday and Fromm will be getting first-team practice reps. Jones still hasn't been cleared for contact and is very unlikely to play Sunday. The Giants are now 2-3 straight up without Jones since he took over as starter in Week 3 of his rookie season. Glennon never left Sunday's loss but was checked by the medical team when he got to the locker room after the game and was diagnosed with a concussion. Thus, he's unlikely, too.

Fromm perhaps can't be much worse than Glennon, who was 23-for-44 for 187 yards and a pick against Miami. The New York offense gained 250 yards, its second-lowest total of the season, and didn't reach the end zone for the first time since Dec. 20, 2020 vs. Cleveland. Glennon averaged only 4.3 yards on his 44 passes as the Giants lost their fourth consecutive road game. Since head coach Joe Judge fired offensive coordinator Jason Garrett, New York has scored one touchdown in eight quarters. 

If this spread holds, and there's no reason to think it won't, it marks the first time the Chargers are double-digit favorites since Nov. 22, 2020, when they were -10 vs. the visiting Jets and won 34-28. The Bolts are 4-6 against the spread in their past 10 as double-digit favorites.
