Davante Adams trade to Raiders odds changes: Las Vegas remains long shot in loaded AFC West; Packers lose half-win via SportsLine Projection Model
Since the NFL added a third wild-card team in each conference, no division has sent all four of its teams to the playoffs. Might the AFC West in the 2022 season? (Likely not since they will beat up on each other.) That absolutely quarterback-stacked division just added the NFL's best receiver as the Las Vegas Raiders stunningly acquired All-Pro Davante Adams from the Green Bay Packers for two 2022 draft picks, including No. 22 overall. The SportsLine Projection Model has upgraded the Raiders and downgraded the Packers as one would expect.
As part of the deal, Adams, who was franchise tagged by the Packers but said he would never play this season on that, is signing a new five-year, $141.25 million contract with Las Vegas, making him the highest-paid wideout in the league. Over the last past seasons, Adams leads the entire NFL in receptions (432), receiving yards (5,310) and receiving TDs (47).
It was thought that the futures of Aaron Rodgers and Adams were intertwined, but it's being reported that Rodgers knew Adams would never play for the Packers again before negotiating his contract. In fact, Adams was offered the same contract by Green Bay but chose to go to the Raiders instead.
Adams is reunited with Raiders quarterback Derek Carr as they both starred collegiately at Fresno State from 2012-13. In that span, Adams led the FBS in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns, and Carr led the FBS in passing yards and passing TDs.
Receivers generally don't make a big impact on NFL futures odds, but Adams is no ordinary receiver and moved the Raiders from +6000 to +5000 to win Super Bowl 57, +3000 to +2500 to win the AFC, and +900 to +600 for the AFC West. That division has added the likes of Russell Wilson and Randy Gregory to Denver, Khalil Mack and JC Jackson to the LA Chargers, and Adams and Chandler Jones to Las Vegas. The Chiefs already were loaded.
Clearly, Green Bay will go sign a veteran receiver now – Allen Robinson is off the market after signing with the Rams -- and probably draft one in the first round come April (also has the No. 28 overall pick). The Packers moved from +1100 to +1200 to win the Super Bowl, +425 to +450 for the NFC and remained at -190 for the NFC North.
NFL season win totals should be out soon, but via the SportsLine Projection Model (see below) improved the Raiders from 8.2 to 8.6 wins and dropped the Packers from 10.2 to 9.7. Green Bay is 7-0 in games without Adams since 2019, it should be noted, and averaged 31.6 ppg in those.
