You might not be aware that two smaller NBA Summer Leagues already have concluded, but don't fret -- the main one with all 30 clubs are represented is the Las Vegas Summer League, which tps off with several games Friday. The one everyone will be watching is San Antonio vs. Charlotte, with Spurs No. 1 overall pick Victor Wembanyama set for his NBA debut. It's already a sellout and ESPN has the telecast. The Spurs have opened as 6.5-point favorites at Caesars Sportsbook.
This writer was wondering if any books would post props for Wembanyama tonight, and FanDuel offers him at +122 to score at least 20 points and at +400 for at least 25. For the regular season, he is given over/under totals of 17.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per game. It's obviously hard for books to know how much Wembanyama might play tonight, as the Spurs will likely be rather cautious with the most-hyped prospect to enter the league since LeBron James.
The last rookie to average 17.5 PPG and 8.5 RPG was Minnesota's Karl-Anthony Towns in 2015-16. He won Rookie of the Year. Wembanyama is the -200 favorite to win the award this upcoming season. Those are the shortest preseason Rookie of the Year odds since Kevin Durant in 2007-08.
Wembanyama recently finished a full pro season with Metropolitans 92 in France, winning regular-season MVP honors, so his minutes will be monitored carefully in Vegas. The Spurs also participated in the California Classic Summer League in Sacramento, but Wembanyama didn't play. He is skipping this summer's FIBA World Cup.
DraftKings offers odds on the MVP of the Las Vegas Summer League and Wembanyama is the +900 favorite, just ahead of Charlotte's Brandon Miller (+1000), the No. 2 overall pick. Miller and the Hornets lost both of their Summer League games in Sacramento, and Miller totaled 24 points, 10 assists, nine rebounds,15 fouls and 10 turnovers in them. He's expected to play tonight and is +220 at FanDuel to score at least 20.
Friday will not be Wembanyama's first game in Las Vegas. He played there in October in an exhibition matchup between his French club and the G League Ignite, which included future No. 3 pick Scoot Henderson, and Wembanyama was spectacular.
The Spurs and Henderson's Trail Blazers are set to play Sunday in Vegas. Henderson is +1100 for Summer League MVP. The Kings' Keegan Murray was the 2022 Summer League MVP after averaging 23.3 PPG ahead of a very nice rookie season. The 2022 No. 1 overall pick and eventual Rookie of the Year, Orlando's Paolo Banchero, averaged 20.0 PPG.
Oklahoma City, led by 2022 No. 2 overall pick Chet Holmgren, is the +700 favorite to win the Summer League. San Antonio is +1200. Portland won it last year and is +950. Golden State is the +8000 longshot – the veteran Warriors don't really have any good young players to send to Vegas.
NBA free pick: Hornets +6.5
