Clippers vs. Cavaliers injury report, odds, spread: Kawhi Leonard, Paul George on sit-down alert in trap game; Andre Drummond questionable Wednesday
Kawhi Leonard has finally accepted playing both ends of a back-to-back for the Los Angeles Clippers and Paul George has done so this season, but don't be shocked if Coach Ty Lue sits one or both of them in a huge trap/letdown game possibility Wednesday night in Cleveland. The Cavs are listing center Andre Drummond, who is playing at an All-Star level, as questionable. Needless to say, the William Hill Sportsbook NBA odds for this game will depend on Leonard and George -- but for now the Clippers are 9-point favorites.Â
The Clippers played one of the marquee games of the regular season Tuesday night in a potential NBA Finals preview at the Brooklyn Nets and lost 124-120 as 1.5-point betting favorites (I recommended Brooklyn). Leonard had 33 points but played 39 minutes (tying a season high) and George had 26 points in 36 minutes.
Add that heavy workload to the fact that Wednesday is the finale of a six-game road trip through the Eastern Conference, and, well, this writer will be very surprised if Lue doesn't rest at least one of his stars. The lone time George has played back-to-back nights was Dec. 29-30 and those were at home. Leonard did it Jan. 5-6, and it was the first time since April 4-5, 2017 he played in both ends of a B2B. The 134 games Leonard played between competing in back-to-backs was the longest such streak in the NBA at the time.
While Leonard has told Lue he's willing to do the B2Bs this season, they agreed it would be something they would evaluate on a case-by-case basis. L.A. for sure will be without starting point guard Patrick Beverley again Wednesday as he's out with a knee injury.
Drummond probably will play for Cleveland even though he's questionable with a back injury. He simply sat Monday in a win over Minnesota because that was the second of a back-to-back. Drummond, a pending free agent, deserves to be an All-Star as he's averaging 18.5 points and a league-best 15.1 rebounds. His 16 double-doubles are among the league leaders and his three 20/20 games lead the NBA.
Cleveland has become very tough to beat at home, winning five of its past six at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse and averaging 118.0 ppg in that stretch. However, the Cavs have lost four straight to the Clippers and the past two at home. L.A. has covered the spread in seven of the past eight meetings.
