Tuesday, September 19 MLB odds, props, trends: Heavy action on Diamondbacks' Zac Gallen, Padres' Blake Snell
Two National League Cy Young Award contenders take the hill tonight, with Arizona's Zac Gallen facing the visiting San Francisco Giants in a series with huge NL Wild Card implications, while award favorite Blake Snell of the Padres toes the rubber at home against the Colorado Rockies. Gallen and Snell are the two most bet-on players on the DraftKings MLB board tonight.
The Diamondbacks currently hold the NL's No. 2 wild card spot and the Giants are two games back of the third spot currently held by the Cubs and Reds. Gallen was the NL Cy Young favorite a few times this season but is now +8000 at DK and likely finishes either third or fourth in the voting. The right-hander is 15-8 with a 3.50 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 199 strikeouts. Tonight will be his career-high 32nd start, and Gallen already has surpassed his previous career high of innings pitched (184.0) with 192.2.
It could be that Gallen is tiring because he has been shelled in three of his past four starts, while the fourth was a brilliant complete-game three-hitter at the Cubs.
Gallen Over 5.5 strikeouts (-110) is the No. 1 prop. He was held to four or fewer Ks in those three bad outings and didn't last more than 5.1 innings in any of those games. Gallen has been far better at home this year (2.18 ERA, 107 Ks in 14 starts) and is 1-0 overall in 2023 vs. San Francisco with a 3.29 ERA and 12 strikeouts in 13.2 innings.
Barring something shocking, Snell is likely to win a second career Cy Young. He's the -750 favorite at DraftKings despite pitching on a team with a losing record. The Padres, though, have won five straight and aren't officially eliminated from playoff contention yet. The lefty is 14-9 with a 2.43 ERA and 217 strikeouts in 30 starts.
Snell to record a win (-105) is his popular prop. That's what bettors will often do instead of backing a pitcher's team as a massive favorite – San Diego is -300 against the Rockies. Snell actually is 0-1 in two starts this year against the Rockies despite a 3.18 ERA.
Tonight's other popular MLB player props at DraftKings:
Phillies' Cristopher Sanchez Over 3.5 strikeouts (-130) at Braves: A low number, considering Sanchez whiffed 10 Braves last Wednesday and has topped 3.5 Ks in seven straight.
Orioles' Kyle Gibson Over 2.5 earned runs allowed (-130) at Astros: Gibson has 14 wins despite a 4.98 ERA thanks to some of the majors' best run support. He had allowed at least 3 ER in six straight before holding St. Louis to a lone earned run last time out.
Braves' Ronald Acuña Jr. Over 1.5 total bases (-105) vs. Phillies: Acuña got Saturday and Sunday off and returned Monday with a double in a loss to the Phillies. He has two singles in four at-bats against Sanchez.Â
